How much for a true luxury vacation?

What should we budget for a week long trip to Europe for a family of four? Excluding flights. For a luxury experience with suite accommodation, great food and top service.

if you have to ask ...

In the summer, in big cities like London, Paris, etc? I’d assume $2k/night minimum just for lodging. Maybe $3k depending on how much space you want. Then I’d assume another $150pp a day in food, so $600/day. Then your activity costs are going to vary based on what you want to do that day.

Ballpark 40K?

Could do it for less or more, but we go annually for a week and have pretty high standards, and that’s what we typically spend before flights.

$150 per day for food for 4 people in London or Paris. Not happening. That wouldn't cover your bottle of wine.

Europe wouldn’t be my first choice for true luxury if that’s the priority, to start.

The PP said $600/day for the family. 4x $150pp

That’s a joke. 150 per person per meal would be more like it.

In the summer, it’s probably closer to $5k per night for a suite (and could be 10k+/night for a true 5 star luxury suite on the Amalfi Coast, in Santorini, etc.).

If you’re only eating at tasting menu restaurants, you’re looking at $1k + alcohol per dinner. High end restaurants would be closer to $500-800 per dinner. You could probably budget $50pp for breakfast (a lot of the hotel breakfasts that aren’t included are this much or at a breakfast restaurant) and lunch maybe about the same.

You'd be hard pressed to spend more than $50 for a kid for breakfast no matter where you eat. And even a luxury trip you aren't going out to 7 course meals for lunch.

For those that said $40K, what does that vacation look like? I'm genuinely curious and want to live vicariously through, not judging.

We did this kind of trip to Barcelona in the summer of 2024. We stayed at the Majestic and had a penthouse suite plus an adjoining room, and the rates were around $3500/night for both. Breakfast at the hotel was included, and we probably spent $200 pp on food and drinks otherwise, plus figure another $100 pp on museum tickets, etc. (and I'm probably lowballing that . . . food is expensive there).

40k is luxury in India. 40k Hawaii is premium economy.

It's about $5000/night to stay at the luxury place we typically stay at Hawaii in November.
