Important poll: last minute weekend trip - Savannah or Key West?

Anonymous
Just got word that grandparents will stay with our kids this weekend (Fri-Sun), so we're going to book a last minute couples trip. We've zeroed down options to Key West and Savannah (for what it's worth, ruled out Miami, Charleston, Nemacolin). Assuming flights work out well for both, which would you choose? Important note: we are not beach people! Enjoy it, and the view, for a bit, but need to have other fun/interesting things to do/see.

Key west.

Key West. You're in luck, it's not really a beach place.

Can’t go wrong with either. Savannah is closer and more likely a nonstop flight. Key West is warmer.

I've been to both. Both are good. Both are quirky.

Key West is more of a tourist destination. Savannah gets tourists but is a small city.

I'd say Key West has a big bar culture. Savannah has that atmosphere on the River Walk but that is only a small part of Savannah.

You have history in Savannah. There is a fair amount of revolutionary war history in Savannah. Sixty percent of soldiers that fought in the Savannah area in the Revolutionary War were of African descent. George Washington had hired Haitian mercenaries. The British had former enslaved African soldiers fighting for them.

You have art. SCAD has a nice museum and several things you can tour.

It will be a good weekend to go to Savannah has it won't be grindingly hot.

We went to a good comedy club in Savannah. I'm not sure if it is still running.

There is a free shuttle across the river. I think we got around town on a free shuttle bus.

We last visited in November and we went to a lot of local activities like local art shows.

Key West--

I'd look into visiting Dry Tortugas National Park https://www.nps.gov/drto/index.htm
You can get there by boat or by little sea plane for the day. It is fascinating to walk around.
Dr. Samuel Mudd, who set the broken leg of John Wilkes Booth, was imprisoned here.

You also have the Hemingway House in Key West.

I've been to Key West once. Once was enough. Key West is known for its bar culture.

I would return again and again to Savannah but if you go to Savannah look on line for activities for locals. I think those are the most interesting.

If you go to Savannah avoid the tourist restaurants. You want to eat where the locals eat. There is really good seafood in Savannah.

All of the restaurants will be tourist restaurants in Key West but there is also good seafood in Key West.

Prices for accommodations and meals will be less in Savannah if that matters.

I was in Key west recently. I'd also looked at going this weekend. Hotel prices are off the charts and I just looked, there are no available direct flights, so I would take key west out. Connecting is a major pain and not worth it for such a short trip IMO.

We were in Savannah recently. The downtown hotels are expensive but you can get hotel rooms from the usual chains on the outskirts for a reasonable price. We did a lot of walking and used the free shuttle buses downtown. Beautiful squares and lots of museums.

Savannah. Key West if you’re into cheesy bars.

I would see where you can find reasonably flights (both in time and cost.)

Valentine's/President's Day combo weekend is extremely popular for travel.

Savannah looks rainy for this weekend. Key West would be better. Avoid Duval Street and look for the higher end restaurants. Would not spend time on Dry Tortugas if all you have is weekend---it takes too long (unless you helicopter). Love the Hemingway House, the Butterfly Museum and just going to all the quirky bars and restaurants. Rent bikes and get cuban sandwiches at Ana's and go across to the Thirsty Rooster (I think that's the name) to eat them with drinks. I love Savannah too ---especially all the artiness from SCAD and the multitude of public square parks.

+1 Hope budget is not an issue. We were looking at last minute flights to someplace warm, and prices are super high.

We are to Key West going soon. What high end restaurants did you like?

We had a great time in Savannah, even the touristy restaurants we ate at were quite good, we had a great time, walking around and shopping and just looking at the beautiful environment. We stayed at a hotel on the river and it was actually fun to watch the shipping containers.
