I was down to one serving on special occasions, ideally before 7 pm because 2 servings led to side effects like headache and disrupted sleep that lingered for days.
I had a single glass recently and felt like I had the flu for a week. I think I’m going to have to abstain from all alcohol from here on out. I had 1/2 shot glass of apple jack last night while baking an apple bread pudding. I didn’t even feel tipsy, but had a horrible night with insomnia and diarrhea. DH had an entire shot and was fine. Will I have to give up real vanilla extract next? |
| Re vanilla, the alcohol evaporates in baking so that should be fine. |
| I’m guessing you are just hitting your late 40s or early 50s and are in late perimenopause. Welcome to the club. Yes, this is the new normal. |
| Idk but I barely drink ever and it’s no loss. If you’re not used to it, you will find that no one gives you a hard time and it’s not a big deal. |
| One glass and you felt like you had the flu FOR A WEEK? I think you should run this by your physician. |
Yup. It sucks but this is what it does to me too. |
| I feel bad for about 24 hours after, then fine, and yes, it really takes the enjoyment out of having a glass of wine. I do think this is a new normal. But feeling as if you have the flu for a week seems extreme. I would get bloodwork done. |
| I sleep poorly and have a headache for 23 hours after 2 drinks. But not an entire week. Do you drink water? |
Not that unusual. A couple glasses for me and I ended up with morning sickness for months! |
| Do you have normal liver values? |
| You can order an alcohol sensitivity test by Genovate from Amazon. You swab the inside of your cheek and send it back. Several weeks later, you receive a full report explaining your sensitivity, genetics, and possible allergic reaction. I cannot drink alcohol because I get migraines. |
| I lost alcohol tolerance slowly while in peri menopause. I’m in full menopause and never go near it. I don’t miss it one bit. The side effects are just not worth it. |

Hi!
I am officially in menopause. I drink water and have normal liver values. I have some long-term chronic health issues (largely autoimmune), but light drinking was not an issue before. I had a physical in the fall and do bloodwork monthly as part of monitoring for a medication I take. None of the medications I take have an alcohol warning. I wish I was exaggerating about how harsh a single serving impacted me. Now a half a serving. My social circle aren’t heavy drinkers and include some teetotalers so I’ll be fine abstaining entirely. I’m relieved to hear this is the new normal for this stage in life. |
Thanks! I might do that both out of curiosity and to be able to offer my daughters any genetic info. |
Glad to hear this. Thanks! |
