I just had a colonoscopy this morning and have a history of polyps. Apparently a large one has grown back and was difficult to remove.
I think surgery might be recommended depending on path results. I think the surgeon was preparing me for this because he said the polyp might just keep coming back and would need frequent colonoscopies. I’ll know more after follow up appointment in ten days. Any experiences to share? Thanks. |
| What type of polyp is it? |
I believe it is a sessile serrated polyp but don’t have the path report yet. The surgeon was not able to remove the whole thing through the scope but IIRC did remove some pieces of it. |
| Depending at least on the location of the polyp you could have a laparoscopic resection which is a relatively simple procedure with little down time. Good luck. |
Thank you! |
| It's a drag but it's going to be a good thing to get rid of it all. |
| Had colorectal surgery about 12 years ago. Not a fun recovery but worth the surgery. |

Thank you everyone! Im not looking forward to surgery but will be very glad to have the polyp removed.
Also I read there is a procedure called Endoscopic Submucosal Dissection (ESD) that is minimally invasive and hoping I will be a candidate for that. ( it’s done at a hospital with regular anesthesia but through a scope, not laparoscopic) Anxious for the meeting to discuss with the doctor. |
| How did it turn out? Any news? Hoping good things for you. |
I had this procedure in hopes of fully removing a polyp/growth. It's not much different from a colonoscopy procedure. Unfortunately for me, the procedure/surgeon confirmed that for me the polyp had grown too far into the intestinal wall and a resection ended up being necessary. But it was worth trying. I hope you have better luck. Let us know. |
Thanks very much PP. Unfortunately, my appointment to discuss is not until next week. The path lab they use only releases results directly to the doctor’s office. I’d love to know now, but can see why it’s better to wait for appointment. I’ll definitely post back once I hear. |
PP, thanks so much for sharing. I’m sorry the ESD did not work out in your case and they ended up doing a resection. It must be a good feeling to know that growth is now gone, even though you had to have surgery. I’m curious how long you had to wait between the two different procedures? Keeping fingers crossed it will be an option for me. |
I’m the pp. I’m answering because you asked but please understand I had particularly bad luck because my mass was so low in the colon. I knew my mass was cancerous from the first colonoscopy. The EDS confirmed that a resection would be required. With docs recommendation, I had chemo and radiation before the resection. So had to wait about 4 months. I’m most cases, I think the surgery could be done as soon as it can be scheduled. Good luck. |
I really appreciate this information and am very sorry you had to go through all that. Thank you so much. |
| My husband had an ESD last summer to remove a large 30 mm polyp, which was benign. He had three back to back colonoscopies about four to six weeks apart. The doctor that found the polyp during the first colonoscopy, tried to remove it during the second one, but was unsuccessful, so my husband was referred to another doctor for an ESD. A surgery was mentioned as an option if ESD was unsuccessful, but was not needed in the end. Husband has to return for his next colonoscopy in three years. |
