I didn’t grow up with sit down breakfasts before school so maybe there’s a step I am missing. I’ve been trying to nail this down for over 20years even before I had kids. I’ve tried starting hours early. Something inevitably throws off the experience. I tried when I had just one kid, I tried with two, now with three. They are 16, 12, and 8.
How are people doing this? Is it just a tv/movies experience?! |
| I don’t read the paper but I do have a proper sit down breakfast while reading book most days. That’s because I am a really early bird and get up really early, long before the rest of my family is up/I have to go to work etc. It’s my one time of day to myself. You too can do it if you feel like getting up at 5:30 but I think most people’s internal clocks don’t work that way unless they are 90 or just have a weird circadian rhythm like I do. |

Yes, we do it every day. Would the kids prefer to sleep an extra 30 minutes? Of course but mornings at the table are just as important as dinners.
I wake up at 5am and get myself totally ready and then get the kids up by 6. By 6:40 they are at the table where breakfast is totally made and plated (eggs, yogurt, fruit, etc). We read the headlines and then do a last minute prep for any tests that’s day. They leave by 7:15 for school and I take the youngest to daycare at 7:30. (3 kids total ages 4, 8and 13) No rush in the morning and everyone leaves calm and well fed. |

In the olden days you either ate breakfast or starved until lunch so yes every morning I woke up and ate breakfast at a table with my siblings. But my dad was already gone. He read the paper every evening.
My kids ate in the car for our 30 minute drive to school. When did your kids eat breakfast? |
| We do! Or try to, as much as possible. But we live a 10 min walk from school that starts at 8:30. |
|
I don’t know if I’ve ever had this experience in life on a school/work day! Even when I was a kid. It was always a quick bowl of cereal or oatmeal, not all of us together, or I ate walking to the bus. My kids are similar. Two of them never even want breakfast on school days. I pack them a larger morning snack.
FWIW, I don’t feel like we are missing out on connection. We drive our kids to school, and use the 20 minute ride to connect. |
I don't know, I think an extra hour of sleep is more beneficial, especially if you're all eating dinner together. |
Especially for the 13 year old |
I think I found the fatal flaw in this plan. |
|
5 AM - wake up
5:30 - gym 6:15 - back home, breakfast, read 7 - get ready, watch morning news, listen to audiobook 8:15 - leave the house |
|
Dont know many people who manage that, most families dont even have a real breakfast!
I lean heavily on hot breakfast versus any other stuff. Kids need good nutrition and hydration before trying to learn, especially any kids (like mine) who would rather talk at lunch than eat. I make a lot of food from scratch due to allergies (eggs and peanuts) for breakfast so that's where my time and energy go at night. Also, if I wake up earlier my kids wake up earlier. |
| We sit down. It's 15-20 min and hot breakfast. Get up at 7. Do all the things to get ready. I make lunch and breakfast and we sit down around 7:50. We leave the house at 8:25 for the bus. |
| Everyone has time to do this. You just have to manage your time appropriately if it’s a priority. If you choose not to go to bed earlier and wake up earlier to have a sit down breakfast, that’s totally fine. It just means having a sit down breakfast isn’t actually important to you. |
I'd rather have the two hours of sleep. I do go to the gym at 5:30pm. I wish I was a morning person, but my body hates it (even when I go to sleep early) |
| My teens scarf down something on their way out the door. My DH leaves very early. I don’t eat until much later, but yes I will sit. We don’t get a newspaper anymore. |
