Pulling this up from a later post down-thread...

I went back to see what I paid for CHC weekend passes in previous years:

2023: $50 each
2024: (Did not attend)
2025: $60
2026: $70

And don’t forget parking!

And don't forget food/drink/coffee costs if you didn't bring your own!

Ahh yes, the wonderful privilege of paying a cover charge to watch my daughter do something I’ve already paid a large sum of money for. The atmosphere of constant whistling, blazing fluorescent lighting, kids “practicing” off the court sending balls into the back of unsuspecting parents heads is super lovely. The filthy floors and bathrooms always let me know the additional charge is making the special extra touches possible.
Can’t wait.

The Cap Hill Classic owners clear well over a million after all expenses. It is big business. In addition to the registration fees and the passes, they get a kickback from every hotel room that is booked.

Ya'll signed up to participate willingly. Quit complaining.

People often ask me whether they should do travel sports. My response is always the same: It's a lifestyle choice.

Who says anybody is complaining? I didn't say they weren't entitled to reap the financial reward? They should make as much money as they can; it's America. Somebody is defensive. Everybody knows that the best tournament is the Triple Crown NIT, but since that is an invite-only tournament, Capitol Hill Classic is the tournament that teams have to go to. Cap Classic does a great job of making it a fun experience for the teams/players, but from a competition standpoint, it is not a good tournament.

It’s a privilege to play at Cap Classic. I heard they turned down 500 teams who registered.

They turn down a lot of the local teams so that they can take more international teams and out of state teams, as they make more money this way due to the kickbacks from hotels.

When Cap Classic first started, they did not attract any teams from outside the DC/MD/VA area. It is the clubs in this area who first supported this tournament and helped it get off the ground. Without these clubs, the tournament never would have materialized into anything. Now, however, Cap Classic has seemingly turned its backs on its roots. Every year, there are tons of local teams that are denied acceptance, simply due to economic reasons (international/out of state teams bring in more money for the tournament).

I believe Paramount is the only local team invited to Triple Crown NIT while other teams like VA Elite, American, Vienna Elite, VA Jrs, Blue Ridge, Metro, MD Jrs, MVSA, etc play in the Capitol Hill Classic.

Good luck to all these teams competing this weekend.

Agree. It is their tournament and they are free to do what they want. But the pursuit of higher revenue has moved the tournament far away from what made it great for years: A tournament where you knew all the CHRVA teams would be able to compete, local teams got a the "travel tournament" experience and where the competition level was well above the average competition level of a typical local tournament.

If you look at the registered teams for the club, patriot and open levels at U13-U17 the ONLY local club with more than one entry in any of those divisions is Metro (who averaged 4 in club, 1 in patriot and 2 in open). No other local club was allowed to have 2 teams in any division. Every other multiple team club is coming from out of town. And when you look across divisions, none of the larger clubs seem to have 3 teams in any age group either. Contrast this with the clubs traveling in having teams ranked ranked 3500+ last year. There were 50+ local teams ranked higher than that in most age groups.

They must have had a rule this year about not allowing more than 1 local team to compete in a division because that maximizes profit. It certainly wasn't done to ensure a high quality competitive tournament or many more local teams would have been allowed to compete.

Metro gets invited to Triple Crown too, but turns it down because they're committed to CHC in honor of Barry Goldberg.
