I want to get into K Pop!

Anonymous
I love Golden from KPop Demon Hunters and would love to explore more KPop to broaden what I listen to. Looking for this kind of upbeat songs right now.

I hear a ton about BTS and obviously there are tons of bands and songs that are popular here too.

Anyone want to recommend specific songs I should start with and might enjoy?

I would say kpop demon hunters is not typical kpop and the songs have some broadway/showtunes elements

Some kpop songs i like: BTS, dynamite and boy with luv; Twice, super shy; Stray kids, Chk Chk Boom, Lose my breath (w Charlie Puth); NCT Dream, Broken melodies

What I did is start listening to the K Pop playlists on Apple Music. Then I could get a sense of who I liked and who I didn't. I do like aespa.

For BTS, start at Dynamite and Permission To Dance, then Boy With Luv, Standing Next to You, Seven, 3D, Who, Like Crazy, Running wild, The Astronaut, Don’t Say you love me, Killing It Girl, Mona Lisa, Life Goes On, Amygdala, Wildflower, Friends.

I sort of got into the whole concept with BTS and I'm pretty sure I either read some longer piece online or watched a documentary where it really got into how these groups are basically scouted, recruited isolated and trained up from even their tween years. It's quite the thing in some places.

My brother lives in a foreign country where all of his kids were basically tested as preschoolers and assigned to schools based on their aptitudes. One of my nieces went to a school that specialized in foreign languages and a nephew was "assigned" by age 5 to a musical education.

Kind of like how it was truly a "Miracle on Ice" for a bunch of American college students who had never before been teammates was able to win in the 1980 Olympics against a team of soviet hockey players who had been known mates since single digit ages, and that training had informed their entire lives.

One of the fatal flaws of that soviet system was probably that they almost never competed beyond their own closed territory and became complacent.

Anyway ... the opposite is true of K-Pop, they are superior

I have so many ideas for you lol. I’d start with just the “Kpop On” list on Spotify though. There have been some really good songs released recently.

If you want to get into BTS, they have a huge amount of music. If you start with their “anthology”/greatest hits album Proof, the first disc of that is all of their title tracks in release order - a title track is the lead promoted single from a new album, plus Born Singer which is a reworking of a J. Cole track. So you can get a good idea of which era of BTS you like best and go from there. Their sound has changed a lot over time but it’s not a bad thing.

Try Twice. I’m going to their DC show next weekend. Start with “this is for” extended version, me + u, talk, sweetest obsession, strategy (it’s on the demon hunters album already), after moon
