Private school tuition increase

Anonymous
Just received the tuition increase notification from kids private school. Does it increase every year in Baltimore as that much? It is a lot in the long term! It will almost be doubling when my kid graduates! I don’t think i can afford at this increase rate. It is terrifying.

what school? what are the details?

I would expect 3-5% a year, but these are strange and expensive times. Anything more than 5% should come with an explanation from the school.

Plan on 5% a year and take everything under as a win.

Please share the school.

DD is in her senior yr at Bryn mawr so I have no idea what the increase is for next year, but it was often 4+%.
And then there’s McDonogh - amazing school but opening of parent night was presentation on how tuition didn’t cover cost to educate and we should all “mind the gap” and pony up another $5k. I skipped that portion of the evening from then on.

If you get a good fit, it can be a fabulous experience but it is really expensive.

That was a common thing private school development offices across the country were saying for a while. My understanding is that most have stopped saying that, because it doesn’t hold up to scrutiny. The best practices for this type of work continues to change.

Donate what feels right for you and your family, if anything at all. Participation of any amount is appreciated.

Mcdonogh, like many other schools, no longer uses that outdated message.

The biggest component of tuition is teachers’ salaries. In times of medium to high consumer inflation, that is going to cause big tuition increases.

Basically $2k at a $40k school?

We also saw 5% this year which seems like it is becoming the normal.

Private school is a luxury. If you can't afford it, don't go.

When you consider which schools include lunch (eg McDonogh and Gilman) and which do not (eg Bryn Mawr and RPCS), the price differences can be somewhat significant. That said, once you are paying $$$$, not sure it makes sense to compromise to save $4k?
It IS very expensive no matter what.

The DC schools are barreling past the 60k mark. Doesn't make me feel any better.
