I’m doing some academic research about successful principals who left soon after the pandemic. This is related to both success before and during COVID, and the reasons they left after. Any good suggestions from any level in FCPS?
Thanks in advance! |
| Left K-12 or were promoted/demoted out of the position? |
| Left the job of principal for any reason; promotion, demotion, retirement, health |
| Dr. Anthony Terrell from Mount Vernon HS. He didn't leave after the pandemic but resigned from FCPS a week before everything shut down. He now works for GMU as a professor in the School of Education. Prior to MVHS, he was the principal at Rocky Run MS and I believe he was well respected there. |
| you're doing academic research on documents? do you attend strayer or what? |
| ^^ dcum not documents |
| I’m betting the research would be with the actual people, not on just from the replies. |
Can you define the dates you are looking at? “Soon after the pandemic” is really vague. I know the exact start date (March 13, 2020), but what are you considering as “after the pandemic?” |
| The research is about the physical and emotional toll the pandemic and challenges that followed took on school leaders. |

(Sorry, I closed too quickly.)
There is a lot of data about how the pandemic impacted students, and some, though not enough, about how it affected teachers. I’m looking at how it impacted school principals. There is already evidence showing that the average number of years as principal has dropped to about four, with even lower numbers at schools with higher needs. I have some names already, but I didn’t have Dr. Terrell. It sounds like he left just before, but he still might have some insight. Thanks for mentioning anyone else who comes to mind. My initial look in our area is really pre-research to see if the topic is worthy of a wider study. |
| Carole Kihm left Longfellow Middle School in 2020. I'm not sure if it was a planned retirement, but she was widely respected and led Longfellow for many successful years. |

This seems really intrusive.
Many people leave jobs for very personal reasons, especially if it is a job they are good at. Discussing private citizens like this on a very public forum seems like a tremendous violation of privacy. |
The original request was simply to share names of successful principals who recently left. It isn’t a secret when principals leave these public positions, and I agree that it wouldn’t be wise to explain here why they left. I’m not sure they would feel intruded upon to be remembered as being good at their jobs or to be fondly remembered. |
She was widely respected as an AP, as well. |
