If you had sealants (teeth) as a kid…

It seems like most of us who are in the “xennial” range (late 30s to mid 40s) had sealants put on molars. I’m curious how many are now also having issues with them…

I’ve had to have a cavity filled on 3 of my molars so far, with the dentist telling me it is because of the sealants failing (stuff getting trapped under the sealant causing an issue). Pretty much the opposite of what they were supposed to do. My husband recently went to the dentist and seemingly is now having the same issue — sealants from his childhood causing issues on his teeth.

Is this a widespread issue? Is this why our kids aren’t getting sealants these days?

Who else is having issues with sealants?

My 13 yo, who takes good care of her teeth, is cavity prone despite sealants. I believe they’re a waste of money.

Interesting that they put them on your 13yo. So far our dentist for our 10 year old has said nothing about sealants...

I had sealants on my back molars as a kid. As an adult, my dentist was concerned by a persistent small odd shadow on my x-rays and suggested we fill them. We thought it was a small cavity. When they started drilling, it all just caved in and it turned out the sealant had been disguising progressively bigger cavities in both teeth. My dentist thought the sealant had probably been inappropriately put on in the first place and trapped what was initially a tiny area of decay, then the sealant disguised it and let it continue to grow.

They were able to fix it, just with larger fillings than they had planned on needing based on the imaging, but my dentist said it was definitely not the first time he'd seen this.

All my teeth with sealants have either very deep cavities or root canals. I currently have 4 crowns and 2 molars lost to abscess.

All my sealant teeth got cavities and were filed years ago

Huh, my kids' dentist did sealants when they were in elementary school a couple years ago.

Is that no longer the norm?

yeah my kids got them too. they are teens now

I had sealants as a kid (couldn't tell you what age, I am in my 50s), and I have zero cavities

I wanted sealants on my molars in my late teens and my dentist refused because it wasn't standard practice.

Eventually I got quite a few cavities in my molars and then I got massive fillings in them and I have one crown in a molar in mid-50s.

I'd rather have had the sealants.

I have had good experiences with sealants. I actually had my dentist reapply a sealant that had worn down. I’ve never had a cavity. Both of my kids have sealants too and no cavities — well not exactly. One of my kids had a molar erupt with weak enamel and it immediately had a cavity that needed to be filled. Other than that, no issues. My husband has weak enamel across most of his teeth, plenty of filled cavities and crumbs, and no sealants. He’s a little older than I am - maybe his timing was off for good dental care. Plus, the enamel thing seems to be genetic.

I had sealants and they all failed in my late 20s. The pediatric dentist for my kids keeps pushing them and I decline every time.

My dentist said she makes lots of money off of people who got them as kids. She only recommends them for very deep groved molars. My kids do not have them

My pediatric dentist has put sealants on my now 13- and 18-yos. But they were adopted to us from a foreign country and came to us with pretty bad teeth soo, maybe that is why?
