1/30 National Shutdown/ICE Out

I am not seeing a thread about this yet. Are you participating? What are you doing? I am a teacher, so I am going to work. I cancelled some subscriptions and will not buy anything today. I will continue purchasing very little and only from local businesses as long as I can. I don’t want this to be a one day thing. This weekend, I will only support local businesses that are Latino-owned and/or closed today or at least posted their support for the protest.

What all can we do, today and beyond?

of course not, this is going to be a bust. most people can't afford to not work for a single day and what would it really prove?

Bit most of us can afford to curb our spending, especially on crap that enriches the wrong people.

I’m a home health caregiver for a profoundly disabled elder who subsists on Medicaid, so there is no point or benefit in me refusing to work - plus I can’t afford not to.

However I am actively working to reform my shopping habits to source what little I buy from smaller retailers and more progressive companies. My goal is to exit the Amazon universe within the next few weeks - I’m just working to find affordable alternatives to the necessities I subscribe to there.

I'm going car shopping today. Should I buy my car tomorrow instead?

Just get it over with and buy a cyber truck with a confederate flag on the roof and a Salt Life sticker on the back.

It’s true, you should just give up on making a difference, you are dragging everything down anyway.

Being a liberal must be so tiresome. How do you keep track of all your pointless boycotts and protests?

I wish this had been better advertised like the "no kings" march. It does not seem to have been well circulated.

I'm a hospital-based doc. Calling out is not in the cards. My significant other is taking a vacation day.

We already avoid Amazon. I have a lot of gear that is buy-for-life stuff already, from kitchenware to furniture. I like not going through a bunch of disposable or planned obsolescence items.

We'll probably talk tonight about some more overarching goals for living with intention. PP, I don't have to keep track of anything -- I just make changes that make sense to me and move on. And organized life isn't beyond you, but if that's not your thing, whatever.

I am in the Midwest, and it is being advertised quite well here! I am surprised how many local businesses are closed today.

PP likely finds the concept difficult and exhausting because like most conservatives, they have no firmly held values or beliefs. It changes with the wind or the whims of dear leader, so living a principled life seems too hard for their little pea brains.
