Wuthering Heights

I’m so excited for this movie and my book club is reading the book.

Good for you op. Just the title brings to me the feeling of humid cold, rainy grey days and utter misery.

I’m not sure I ever hated a book more than this one. Won’t watch any of the movies.

The movie looks dreadful. I'll rewatch the Oberon/Olivier version, the only one that comes reasonably close to the book. Though I wish Vivien Leigh had been cast as Cathy, had more of the character's innate fire.

I think I have PTSD from reading that book in high school. Maybe I should give it another go.

I think this version will be gorgeous. But I hated the book. So much misery. So this will probably be a pass even though I love the two leads in this new movie version.

I love love Wuthering Heights. Also highly recommend the Favorites, a modern book based on the WH story.

Emerald Fennel makes some strange movies so I'd prepare for this one to be weird. Early reviews suggested there was a lot of weird sex stuff in this one.

So before taking your mom to this one, do some reading.

The first trailer made that clear. It was widely ridiculed, resulting in the swift release of a new one.

And to be clear, it's possible Fennel will find an audience for her adaptation and it could appeal to certain people. Trying something weird and different isn't necessarily bad (I haven't seen the movie, I have no idea) but if you're really into the book you just need to be prepared for that.

I mean, every film version of this wildly overrated book/story has been awful.

The only way to make a good movie based on the novel would essentially require a fan-fiction rewrite.

NP. Ahh, I love that whole feeling. Dark, damp days, the windswept heath... right up my alley!

I can’t wait. Love Margot and Jacob.

Good point. Saltburn was so over-the-top in that respect.

WH is one of the dumbest, overhyped books I ever had to read. A minority of people in Cathy's socioeconomic bracket would have married a first cousin, let alone twice. Heathcliff's wealth acquisition is improbable. More improbable is the fact that he was informally adopted by a member of the gentry and treated as the favorite, over biological children. None of the characters' actions and motivations make sense. It's as if the person who wrote the book was a social outcast and didn't really know how people operate.
