| DC has a 3.75 uw, 1500+, with near-maximum rigor at a top private feeder. High impact ECs and excellent writing. They're applying to health & society/public health and adjacent majors as a non-pre-med. Aiming for a T20 (non-HYPSM) -- do they have good chances? All anecdotes/feedback/input is appreciated! |
| Public health, health and society, these are popular premed majors. |
Yes, agreed - DC tried to emphasize that they are not pre-med and have the ECs to back that up. |
| For top private high schools, your high school data will be key. Check Scoir or Naviance and talk to the counseling office. |
There are a lot of dimensions to an applicant that those graphs don't show however |
| I would prob put my money on at least 1 T20 admit with that profile. Something like Cornell/Northwestern/Columbia? I know those schools all have Public Health majors |
| what is the feeder school? Is it here in the DMV? |
| hard no for public kids with those stats but not sure about private kids |
| Their numbers won't eliminate them, but those schools are reaches for everyone. Shoot their shot, for sure, but have likelies where they'd be pleased to attend, too. (There's nowhere in the public health world that you can get to from JHU but not from JMU.) |
Which schools did kid apply to in RD? Switch to ED2 at WashU/Vandy now if u still can. |
| How much SAT score is above 1500 will matter. Is it above 1550? |
| Awards, leadership, relative class rank? |
Important questions. |
For this major, Hopkins and Emory are the best fit. Did you apply to any liberal arts? Somehow I think the profile leans LACs. |
| Be full pay and apply ED too. This strategy worked for a student at DC’s private - was premed through most of HS - after meeting with private college counselor they switched to public health/health and society/ anthropology etc. Parents helped align extracurriculars to fit to the story. |
