Dear DCUM,
DD, 10, is getting really into money. We taught all 4 of our kids about the importance of saving and a bit of frugality. I believe it was two years ago when she and her twin brother started a lemonade stand. This was during cherry blossom season so they got quite a bit of money from that. I let them keep some and invested some for them. After that, DD didn’t pay too much attention to money and was more interested in playing soccer with her friends. Recently though, she’s well… changed. She sold some of her Halloween candy as she doesn’t like sour candy and she also sold “loom bracelets” whatever those are. But in the past week she started loaning money to people. On her school computer she looked up loaning and found out about interest rates and things are getting out of control. I don’t want to ruin an entrepreneur in the making but I think this has gone a bit too far. Thank you so much, Marlene |
| Oh jeez. You don’t want to make a future finance bro! Punish your child. Also there is no need to sign your posts. You’re not exactly Picasso. |
|
I would tell her that she shouldn’t focus her efforts on getting money from her peers since their parents may be upset.
Encourage her to find another business opportunity—crafting and attending kids days at farmers markets, Etsy store, designing shirts and upload the designs to online places where people can purchase t shirts to order. |
| Teach her about investing. Teach her about community lending like CDFIs. Teach her about social entreprenuerism, B Corps, etc. |
| Oh good, Marlene is back. |
| 10 year old loaning money….good luck with that. Maybe as the fourth kid she gets less… |
Who? |

| Marlene, Marlene, Marlene , MarLEEEEEEN! |
| Marlene has a loan shark for a kid. |
She won't take your man, don't worry. |
Agreed. A friend’s kid learned to crochet and sells cute stuffed animals online and at markets. Similar age. |
Oh, don’t be so sure 🤓 |
Hey Marlene, you suck! |
What did Marlene do? |
