January Try outs / ID Sessions

We were invited by friends to register for an upcoming ID session. Is it normal for ID sessions to be this early in January? Is this a formal try out or will try outs be held in the Spring? What’s the difference?

ID sessions are usually attending a practice then some clubs do formal tryouts but by then the team is pretty much picked. I’d sign up and go if invited to an ID session. Much better chance to see how you fit in.

Normal for ID sessions to be this early? Formal, yes. Informal, no. Everything is accelerated this year. I don't know whether it is natural competition or whether everyone is trying to get ahead of the age group changes. Tryout announcements and the announced coaching slates are earlier than normal for several clubs.

We have been invited to practices without formal registration. Either way, go. Check IG to see if it is public information. If it is not public, use it as an opportunity to learn about the club and showcase your kid to see if it is a fit. ID session in the standard practice environment are 100% better than a dog and pony show tryout. Good luck!

Maybe a silly question, but if registration for ID sessions say they’re open but there’s no link, how do you sign your kid up to tryout? Am I missing something? My DC is interested in moving up to ECNL from ECNL-R at a different club.

A lot of ECNL clubs don’t look at RL kids too seriously. In general they feel if the kid is good enough their current ECNL club would have moved them up.

Understood. Current club tops out at RL. Not concerned about if they make it, happy where we are, they just want to try out.

I have a U12 at an FVU feeder and we haven’t received anything about tryouts. I know some players have been invited to ID sessions and scrimmages. I would think a link on their website would be operational if they are saying registration is open. I don’t have high hopes for my child making it because I think they mostly know who they want by now. But they aren’t so far off that it’s not worth trying out and a good experience either way.

It's definitely good to go for experience but if you weren't invited to go to their winter ID sessions then your chances of making the team are slim to none.
