How to Handle Geometry Teacher Situation

Anonymous
There are two honors geometry teachers at the school. In one class with the teacher, kids are getting in the 90s on tests etc.

In other class, kids who normally are straight A’s and have had math be their strongest subject are literally at C, D, and Fs. We know because the kids and parents in the class are talking due to being very confused and surprised.

No matter how much these kids are studying, the packets for prep vs test are completely different. The packets themselves are so challenging that even kids tutors sometimes are not sure.

Over that, quizzes account for 20%, and the students have had only one all quarter.

Any situations like this and suggestions on addressing? I mean, this goes on kids high school transcripts…. And this many students doing this bad… something is off…

This is life from now on.

We had this from algebra through MV calc at various times.

Do you want kids to learn or kids to get an A. Two entirely different things.

Obviously both… not sure how much they are actually learning if so many are failing. Practically, of course the grade is important! It’s on their high school transcript!

My university professor spouse would tell you that the ability to show improvement over a school year is what stands out the most. Spouse would notice the kid who got a D first quarter but an A fourth quarter with a C and a B in between -- that tells a good story. Now this is a student who battled through the subject matter and kept trying. Maybe the teacher was hard or maybe the subject was a hard one for them, but man, this student hung in there, kept trying, and fought to improve! Too many easy As in high school today, unfortunately.

Well if they are in 8th grade they can always expunge the grade and retake geometry in 9th.

Organize with other parents and talk to the principal. I hate doing this kind of thing but it’s all you can do.

That's all good and well in college, but when your kid is applying to the same colleges as the kids getting easy A's in the other Geometry section then the final grade's impact on GPA matters more than whatever feel good story the quarterly grades tell.

Yep. Exactly. The Grade really matters here!

Unfortunately this can happen at any grade and with any subject. This even happens in college. Some teachers grade easy and others grade hard.

This. We did tutoring at least twice a week.

This happened last year for DC who had a terrible algebra teacher. We hired a tutor to cover what she wasn’t teaching. DC ended up with an A, no thanks to that teacher.

What grade is your kid in? If it is 8th expunge the grade and retake in summer.

8th, yes. It’s a possibility to do that. Sucks though.
