Why was Las Vegas cheaper when it was ran by the mob?
Are "legal" corporations greedier than illegal ones? It seems to me that there is no end in sight to corporate greed supported by the government. This is just insane. |
| Of course corporations are greedier lol. Pablo Escobar said his biggest mistake was joining politics. He said he thought mobsters were ruthless and greedy, but he said politicians are the worst and most corrupt and ruthless humans he has ever encountered. |

Wait how long have you been going to Vegas? By the mid-80s the mafia was mostly out of casinos there.
Things were cheaper 20-30 years ago because it was a bit harder and more expensive to get to Vegas, especially from outside the US, and it has become such a huge convention magnet. It's just like everything else, mass affluence, etc |
(1) Inflation (2) Mass affluence (3) Who said the Mafia is gone? They just morphed into a corporate-political entity that runs our country today. |
There’s this thing called inflation. Maybe you have heard of it. |
The FBI effectively reduced the LCN to a shadow of what it used to be. https://lasvegassun.com/news/2002/jul/02/organized-crime-loses-its-foothold/ |

Tax compliance
Loss leaders to get gambling not food revenues |
| Nothing to do with the Mob vs Corporate ownership. Vegas' near monopoly on legal casino gaming has slowly eroded over 50 years. Gaming revenue was the lifeblood of old Vegas, the free drinks, cheap eats, and shows where all about pumping up gaming revenue. Up to the early 90s gaming revenue made upwards of 75% the strip's total revenue. Today it runs 25-35% depending on the property. Rooms, F&B, Entertainment, and rent from outside vendors fill the void. |

Las Vegas isn't really what it once was. There are casinos everywhere, so now it has to be an actual destination, and that costs money.
But yes, 1970s Vegas was an experience. Now it's just corporate garbage. |

I just came back from Vegas. Worst American city I have ever been to. Overpriced, smelly, too many smokers, too many ugly hookers thinking everyone is looking for one.
That city deserves to just go bankrupt for real. |
| I can hear Matthew Perry’s voice in Fools Rush In. “Everything about Las Vegas is about leaving it. That movie, the song, even the mob left Las Vegas.” |

The old Vegas made all its money from gambling. Hotel rooms, dining, shows etc were all fairly cheap as an enticement to get everyone to come to Vegas to gamble - including working and middle class Americans.
Today, however, if you feel like gambling, you can lose all the money you want just by using your phone. Online gambling means you don't need to go to Vegas to satisfy that itch. Plus there are casinos everywhere. The inside of the MGM casino at National Harbor is no different than the inside of a casino in Vegas. But the biggest thing is that Las Vegas embraced corporate enshittification. The Vegas of today sucks. The hotels are empty but they still charge an arm and a leg for absolutely everything - from absurd "resort fees" to $7 bottles of water. The working and middle class can't afford Vegas anymore, and the rich have better places to go. And, of course, the Canadians and many foreigners won't go anywhere near the US these days, which really hurts Vegas. So Vegas today is increasingly a desolate wasteland. If Vegas wants to survive, they are going to have to go back to their roots as an affordable and seedy mecca for vice. |

It's easier to keep prices down when anytime a worker complains, they take a long walk off a short pier instead of worker's comp. Do you even understand the law of the mob, OP? There is no dissent if you want to stay alive. |
