The old Vegas made all its money from gambling. Hotel rooms, dining, shows etc were all fairly cheap as an enticement to get everyone to come to Vegas to gamble - including working and middle class Americans. Today, however, if you feel like gambling, you can lose all the money you want just by using your phone. Online gambling means you don't need to go to Vegas to satisfy that itch. Plus there are casinos everywhere. The inside of the MGM casino at National Harbor is no different than the inside of a casino in Vegas. But the biggest thing is that Las Vegas embraced corporate enshittification. The Vegas of today sucks. The hotels are empty but they still charge an arm and a leg for absolutely everything - from absurd "resort fees" to $7 bottles of water. The working and middle class can't afford Vegas anymore, and the rich have better places to go. And, of course, the Canadians and many foreigners won't go anywhere near the US these days, which really hurts Vegas. So Vegas today is increasingly a desolate wasteland. If Vegas wants to survive, they are going to have to go back to their roots as an affordable and seedy mecca for vice.
