My husband may be making a major and much desired career change. He has an interview in a couple of weeks and his chances are genuinely good, but obviously nothing is guaranteed.
Months ago I came across a very niche gift that would be perfect if he gets it. The problem? There’s currently only one left in stock, so if I want it, I need to buy it now. It’s $5, so cost isn’t an issue, and if he doesn’t get the job I’ll donate it. Here’s the (possibly irrational) hang-up: I’m superstitious and worried this is “putting the cart before the horse” or somehow inviting bad karma. DCUM reality check requested—is this silly superstition, or would you wait until there’s an offer in hand? |
| Which is going to upset you more. He gets job but not that gift or he doesn't get job and you have to spend life not mentioning gift disposal. |
| I'd get it, with the mindset that it's something he would like for some future occasion. It could be a birthday, Christmas, a new job... |

Buy it. If you don’t and he gets the job you will regret that you don’t have it. If he doesn’t get the job, no big deal.
When my daughter was waiting for her early decision results from university, i bought a sweatshirt online from there. When she was accepted, i took a photo of her smiling face wearing the sweatshirt. I love that photo. It makes me feel good to see her so happy wearing her swag from an exciting moment in her life. If she had not been accepted, i would have just gotten rid of it quietly and all would be well. I say celebrate the happy moments in your life. |
| You're a nice person, OP. I think you should buy it. |
OP here. The gift is completely useless to him if he doesn’t get the position. |
|
No OP, do not buy it!
You will tempt the wrath of the thing from atop the thing! Now go outside and spit! |
I love this story, it’s so heartwarming! Thanks for sharing; it definitely moved the needle! |
Thank you
|
You got me curious. |
I see what you’re doing there

It’s more of a joke thing. Think in terms of a World’s Best Lawyer mug or similar. |
this. 1000 times this. |
| Do not buy it! I was in the same situation and bought it, and the deal fell apart. I know it’s ridiculous but I definitely felt like I jinxed it. |
Oh no, don’t tell me that lol |
