If you choose CCDC > Bethesda/CCMD

What made you choose Chevy Chase DC? Are you happy with your choice?

Live in CCDC. Easy, equidistant walk to three Metro stations, with good bus options (Better Bus has been overall bad for most of the bus system but it’s been a massive improvement for CCDC). Big house, big yard (most of the houses we looked at in close-in Maryland had laughably bad outdoor space because the houses took up so much of the lot). Much lower cost of living because of DC’s favorable property taxes. Don’t have to deal with downtown Bethesda’s terrible congestion (literally all of the traffic lights need to be retimed).

Schools factor in for some.

Already have a house in DC so I wanted to diversify

Do you think life feels very different? Are there cultural differences between the two?

Bethesda. Big house and big yard with nice outdoors space. Park and walk to avoid Bethesda Row congestion or stick to Woodmont triangle area. Metro access and buses abound. Schools far better. Access to the beltway and leaving this area far better.

Much of it had to do with the inventory that was available at our price point when we purchased.

We wanted to be able to walk to metro, stores, restaurants, etc., which meant the house needed to be reasonably close to downtown Bethesda, CC MD close to Upper CT Avenue or CC DC.

We ended up in CC DC and have generally been happy with the choice. Close to FH metro, shops on CT Avenue, etc. FH was a big draw for us when we bought in the early 2000s, so it's been depressing how much FH has declined since then...let's hope the TJ, Total Wine et al signify a rebirth.

Sent kids all through DCPS and both are at top 20 colleges. If we had been thinking more about colleges back when we bought, we probably would have given more consideration to VA just because they have better in state options compared to MD.

Wanted to be closer to the rest of DC (we both work downtown, and our house is on the side of CCDC closer to CT Ave, which allows for an easy commute), and preferred the diversity and lower-pressure environment of DCPS vs. MCPS. We love it, no regrets.

It was announced that this bakery is coming to Friendship Heights soon https://www.kneadsbakeshop.com. So, things may be looking up.

Bethesda ranked #3 by US News for best places to live for quality of life. First and second places go to Brookline and Newton in MA.

So Bethesda, hands down for DMV area.

I like the bougie feel of the neighbors.

It’s the same. They’re next to each other. These people above me are hair splitting

I honestly don't see the appeal of choosing CCDC over Bethesda/CCMD. It's worth it to go a few blocks farther in order to live on the Maryland side. The MCPS schools are pretty good, and you have way more amenities in Maryland. At a minimum, you'd have a neighborhood pool (summer outdoor pool club) that you could join if you live in Maryland. (In all of upper NW DC, I believe that there is one outdoor public pool, and it has limited hours.)

If your child goes to high school in MCPS, there are a lot of way to participate in school sports against the 20+ other high schools in Montgomery County.

The commute really is not that different -- not enough to make up for the shortage of amenities in DC, in my humble opinion.

Much higher COL in Bethesda because of taxes. And do you actually think there are no high school sports in DC. Are you honestly that stupid?

I love living in CCDC and one of the things I especially appreciate are the sidewalks. I walk a lot, including with my dog, and dislike neighborhoods without sidewalks.
