A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, Game of Thrones prequel

Anyone start this last night? I didn’t even know about it

A century before the events of "Game of Thrones," two unlikely heroes wander Westeros. In an adaption of George R. R. Martin's novella "The Hedge Knight," a young and naive but courageous knight, Ser Duncan the Tall, and his diminutive squire, Egg, face a series of dangerous exploits. Set in an age when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne and images of the last dragon have not yet passed from living memory, great destinies and powerful foes await these improbable and incomparable friends.

Waiting for my son to wake up so we can watch!

I've read the novellas (there are only 3, in classic GRRM fashion he's talked about writing more for years). They're cute and generally more light hearted than his other work.

WOULDN'T IT BE NICE IF HE JUST WROTE THE DAMN LAST BOOK?

All three of the Knight of Seven Kingdoms books combined are half the size of the shortest of the GOT books, so it will be interesting to see how the show runners stretch those into full seasons. To start with nothing really happened last night, compare that to the first episode of GOT. At least this show will be a lot easier to follow, no where near as many characters or sub-plots.

Good casting for Egg, Dunk seems OK too.

I've just given up, TBH. Dance with Dragons was a mess anyway.

We've been waiting 15 years for the next to last book, he'll never even start working on the last one. Jon Snow will forever remain dead but at least Sansa escaped.

There is a writer's block, and there is George RR Martin's writer block.

George’s problems are as follows:

1) he and his big name fans who run his website have said that he doesn’t use outlines, notes, etc. as much as other fantasy writers. He kind of goes by vibes. This makes it hard for someone else to step in and “help,” or even take over the whole thing. Brandon Sanderson was able to finish The Wheel of Time books well after Robert Jordan’s death because Jordan gave him really good notes and plans. Also I personally think their writing styles are similar which helps.

2) the ending of the TV series is approximately what George had planned for the books (obviously there would be some differences), but people didn’t like it so now he feels he has to go back and edit and change stuff he may have already written.

3) We all know the differences between the books and the show got much larger over time, even discounting the fact that the show outpaced the books by a lot. There were characters, fairly major ones at that, in the books who never appeared in the show. Now everyone knows that since the show ending was approximately what George wanted for the book ending, those characters are essentially unimportant red herrings, not critical to the end game, and thus he’s further lost motivation to continue the books since a bunch of the characters have been revealed to be unimportant.

4) he keeps getting pulled into side projects which he seems to like better at this point. George made most of his money as a screen writer/script writer before hitting it big with his novels (he did publish some before the first ASoIaF book but it wasn’t really lucrative). It seems like he can never turn down “write an episode of a show!” Or “write a bunch of short stories!” And it’s obviously much easier to go that route than to crank out a 1000 page book that has to be internally consistent with his other 1000 page books that every nerd on planet Earth has already read multiple times.

Spoiler me. Never read books. Jon is dead? How?

He gets killed at the end of book 5 when the other members of the Nights Watch turn on him in a mutiny because of a bunch of reasons. He doesn’t stay dead though, just like in the show.

Ha. As someone who read the books long ago and only dipped in and out of the shows to see how they were doing, I completely stopped where the books stopped. What was the point. They did horrible things with the show.

I'm afraid I'm a permanent opt out.
Something better is bound to come along!

In the show he comes back to life, in the books he is dead and seemingly will remain that way.

I’m quite sure he’s going to get brought back to life if George ever finishes the books.
