Regional magnets - will Option H give away Crown to rich region 4 and region 5 gets the short end of the stick - AGAIN?

The other thread is just too much about where Wootton goes so I am starting this thread to discuss regional magnets.

Region 5 will have just Gaithersburg, QO and Watkins Mill? Where does Magruder go with Option H?

Does this mean that not only do Gaithersburg and QO residents lose the brand new school that was supposed to solve the overcrowding, but now lose access to the newest labs too since Option H will put Crown in Region 4?

The courses in each region are also not the same and Region 5's magnet kids will not have access to advanced engineering, the aviation program at Magruder, ptech

I wonder if a lawsuit against this inequality will have merit since the regional magnets were supposed to make all courses accessible to all.

I think it will make sense if they change 6 regional model to 5 regions (25 HS/5 = 5 HS each region)

What happened to Rockville? it was in Region 4 eariler

Oh, Rockville HS & Magruder HS suddenly disappear!? Would they both be zoned to zone 3 by any chance?

I think this google drive link is grabbed from the boundary study webpage, which only includes HSs in the boundary study. So Rockville HS will still be in Region 4.

This is quite unfair to Region 5 if option H is the final adopted option.

What magnets program do region 5 missing if Crown HS is given to Wootton HS ( one less HS in region 5). I assume missing Magruder HS will still belong to region 5.

IMO, Rockville would have gotten the short end of the stick if they had stayed in Region 4. They would be competing with Wootton, RM, Churchill, and for test in spots, that would be tough on Rockville students.

No one cares much about the regional magnets study because the hot topic is the boundary study now. Maybe after boundary study decision comes out in March, then affected region will come out to voice opinion. I think some regions are strong, except a few ones. And, I agree that 6 regions are too many, maybe get it down to 4-5 regions max to reduce funding of those programs and busing cost.

That would limit the seat availability and continue the very long bus rides. Also with Crown and Northwood it is 27 HS not 25. It becomes 26 only if Wootton becomes a holding school such that one HS that is being renovated or repaired is constantly there as opposed to where it should be.

There is no such thing as equity in MCPS. Don't you see they stopped even using that word?

Gaithersburg property values will rise if it is in region 4.

Equity, it justifies everything, but is so elastic, no one knows what it means.

Yup! If you want ant Gaithersburg to keep access to Crown, you need to support the Wootton cluster’s oppose H efforts. You need to testify at BOE.

OP, thanks for posting.

Frankly, I thought of Option H went through, Crown would stay in Region 5, then MCPS would do a magical wave of the hand and say "Wootton, you're now Region 5."

No way to tell what will happen until Supt presents his final reco.

Be sure to come with a check for $30 million to pay for the school we don't need.
