Lawmaker dies: Representative Doug LaMalfa, a rice farmer who portrayed himself as a voice for rural residents of his Northern California district, has died. Mr. LaMalfa’s death, described by several of his colleagues as sudden, shrinks the Republican majority in the House to 218-213.

He can't - you can't just redistrict one district. You have to redistrict them all (which will happen for the election in November). The latest the special election can happen is June.

After January 5, it'll shrink to 217-213, after MTG retires.

On January 31, a Democrat will be elected to represent Texas' 18th district, replacing Sylvester Turner (who died almost a year ago, byw!). Then it will be 217-214.

My Democratic congressman Don Beyer posted heartfelt condolences on social media. It is nice to see that some people are still kind, respectful humans regardless of politics. The entire Trump administration should take note.
