| We have never gone to the Caribbean. Would this be a good idea for approx. 5 days. Kids are college age. |
| We love St. John - it's gorgeous but small and quiet. Lots of beaches/snorkeling to explore, but not many restaurants or other activities if you're more into that kind of vacation. If you're looking for an idyllic, relaxing trip - I'd highly recommend. But be sure to get an update on Hurricane Irma damage - we haven't been since then. |
| Is it best stay at a VRBO rental? I heard that many of the resorts closed |
There weren't many resorts ever. A villa is the best bet, with a rental car. |
Agreed. If you have passports, also check out Tortola in the British Virgin Islands. You can ferry just as easily there as St. John (assuming you fly into St. Thomas). |
| Anyone been there recently? How is the hurricane damage? |
Which hurricane are you referring to? The last hurricane that majorly damaged St. John was Irma followed by Maria back in 2017. They did not sustain significant damage from hurricane Erin that passed through the Virgin Islands this year. |
Tortola in the BVI was devastated by hurricanes several years ago. Hopefully it has bounced back but I haven’t been in many years |
We were in Virgin Gorda in 2023–the islands have mostly bounced back, although there are still signs of what Irma left behind. |
| St. John is one of my favorite places in the world. I would recommend staying in a VRBO with easy access to Cruz Bay as that’s where the bars are and college kids will want to go out. Rent a jeep and you can go explore all of the different beaches. Be sure to drive all the way to the other side of the island, the views are amazing! |
| I already booked a house for next year's winter break. We went once in July 2021. I like to go for a week because it's a little longer to get there with the flight from STT then ferry. |
I have a friend who is going in a few weeks. They also went last year. They said it’s fine. |
| Be prepared to pay 50-100% those weeks. |
| 50-100% MORE those weeks over earlier December prices |
I returned to St John last year for the first time since 2017. The reefs did seem less vibrant and colorful than I remembered. However, the infrastructure on the island seemed fine, and some beaches have improved facilities compared to pre 2017. |
