Its literally impossible to give someone advice on a military academy app in 2025 without these considerations.

If the kid isn't 100% gung ho, its a bad idea.

My DC was in same situation last cycle. Also received congressional nom. You have to be all in on wanting to go to an academy. It's definitely not a half way thing. Need 100% total commitment to it. It's not just college. It's better your kid knows that now than later if gets admitted and he gets there. Good luck to your DC.

Nonsense. The current administration is term limited. A student starting in Fall 2025 will still be in college when a new administration takes office.

OP, congratulations to your DC it's a huge honor.

But I agree with the PP, if there's any uncertainty, your DC should pass. It's a very very very hard road - an excellent education and career, but it requires a level of commitment and determination well beyond any typical college experience. Same for the post-grad service requirements.

One of my neighbors growing up made to West Point - he was back home after a week or 10 days.

The service academies are a great option for some kids. All have solid academics. Being a military officer is a great option for those who want that

All of the service academies (and also VMI or Citadel) involve / require some things I would call silly, like having to square one's arms while eating in the dining hall. Some might call some common aspects of student life at an academy as hazing.

ROTC is another great option that also leads to a military officer career. This usually will have less of the silliness (and less hazing).

For Navy or USCG, please also see the separate thread on the US Merchant Marine Academy.

Why?

Who in their right mind lets a child do this now?

You posted this question on a soical media platform zero privacy.

Shame on you for even having a consideration for your child to go to war against the American people and needless wars in other countries for a fascist dictator.

If you think Trump is ever leaving office you have lost the plot.

This is the answer, OP. No need to read further as your thread will now quickly deteriorate.

GL to your DC.

ROTC sounds like it's a better option. It's a significant amount of work during college but you can leave the program at any time and you're still a student at the college, unlike the service academies. Many kids have a hard adjustment but end up sticking it out because they make friends in the program, etc.

What happened with your dc? Fwiw dc did the leadership camps and LOVED them. Dc is extremely disciplined and accustomed to significant structure

We are aware of ROTC of course. Why do you think it’s a better option?

I think the answer is a little more complicated than that
