Weird response from recruiter?

Anonymous
I discussed my offer for a senior IC role with the recruiter today. The role would require relocation. I asked about an increase in both salary and what they’re offering for relocation. He intimated that if I were in a higher-status role the negotiation would be easier/ a no brainer, but seemed to indicate my asking was an inconvenience and/or out-of-line. Obviously I didn’t really feed into his intimations but is this a red flag or a normal recruiter response?

It indicates they don't think the job you are applying for is high status or at least not enough to pay more for even relocation, let alone salary.

Recruiters lie about salary/what's possible. It's impossible to tell whether he's accurately representing the organization or not. All you can do it determine what your line is, stick to it, and see if he is still interested.

It means you aren’t the hot shit you think you are. The fact that you had to come post this here indicates the recruiter is probably right.

I mean, come ON. Are you clueless?

I guess that’s fair, but I’ve done a lot to get to the offer stage, including visiting the team on-site (out of state) and making a presentation, and dining with the hiring team. I also went through a five-hour assessment with an organizational psychologist, which is a step in the hiring process expected only for managerial roles/roles in a certain pay band.

I asked for an increase between 6%-13% than what’s being offered. I also asked for wiggle room on their offer of $5k for a relocation incentive. This is reasonable, no?

Recruiters sometimes are paid more if they get you to accept less. I've had recruiters swear to me a salary wasn't possible and then when I said "cool, bye", totally change their tune.

What a weird statement. I’m being offered a role and asked for more. I always ask for more. Is this not standard? Does it indicate that I think I’m “hot shit”? If you’re gonna get more you have to establish that at the outset. No one is able to successfully negotiate once they’re locked in.

It means the recruiter is lazy and wants to not do extra work. They are grumbling. Hold your ground

Salary expectations should be discussed before you get to the offer stage. When they make the offer officially they want it to be take it or leave it. Negotiating the relo package, vacation or bonus terms is fair game but there could be limitations based on level.

Recruiters are sales people, and some are just as slimey as care sales persons. Yes, it's your job to ask for more than the first offer and theirs to down play if it's possible. The company either wants you (they have invested more than you in the process so far, so I'd think they do), or doesn't. I don't think you did anything wrong, and am always disappointed when a candidate doesn't push back/ask for little more.

As for 19:02, someone pissed in their Cheerios this morning and they still aren't over it

OP, ignore these people. Hold the line and demand the comp you require to make the move.

I've had recruiters tell me the same. Thank them and move on. Don't waste your time with opportunities that don't meet your requirements.

Expectations, of course. But once offer is made that is when you start to negotiate because things might be off.

What was the roles stated range and what are you asking?

The the relocation to a lower COL area or higher?

Not a weird statement at all. You simply don't understand it.

Your request for more does not indicate that you "aren't the hot shit you think you are." Your attempt to negotiate salary is to be expected. It is your befuddlement over the recruiter's response to it that indicates that you are failing to understand your place here and your worth in the context of this particular job.
