| Why aren't there any reasonably priced Catholic high schools in the greater Rockville area run by the archdiocese, the way the k-8 schools are? Why are all Catholic high schools "independent"? I imagine there would be a huge demand for a $20k/yeah high school. |
|
Good Counsel in Olney is supported by the ADW.
Lots of kids in Rockville also go to SJC, which gets money from the ADW. Both schools have buses to help families with transportation. I think the tuition at both schools is approaching 30 K a year now, though. |
|
So the idea is that the ADW make up the difference between the $33k OLGC charges and the $20k you would like to pay?
For a 500 student high school, that cost would be $6.5 million a year. (500 x $8k) Where do you see that money coming from? I have no doubt that there would be huge demand for an equivalent high school at a $20k price. But that would take someone else’s money to make up the difference. |
| I have always wondered this too. Why is there no archdiocesan school like Arlington? Bishop ireton, Paul VI are all around 20k, which is way more reasonable than all the Catholic HSs in MD. |
| Catholic schools in Pittsburgh are half the price of the high schools here. One assumes they are partly subsidized by the archdiocese there. ADW could do that too. It's a matter of priorities. And clearly the ADW thinks we're all rich enough to afford the tuition. |
Those buses are going to cost you another few thousand dollars though. At least for Good Counsel. |
ADW does subsidize SJC and Good Counsel. Pittsburgh has a far lower cost of living than the DMV, so that’s an unfair comparison. The tuition at SJC and GC is substantially lower than that of other private high schools in the area. |
Also, GC and SJC give out a lot of FA. I suppose they could lower their tuition, but not give out FA. That approach would lower tuition costs for UMC families, but shut out lower income kids, which most wouldn’t support. |
| With Archbishop Carrol and Elizabeth Seton are within the price range. |
SJC and Good Counsel are independent and do not get funding from the archdiocese. Archbishop Carroll and Don Bosco are the only high schools that are diocesan schools and receive ADW funding. Almost all the K-8 parish schools are funding solely through tuition and the parish as well, with just a few exceptions. The archdiocese may help with extraordinary expenses for repairs like a sudden roof or HVAC situation, but the parishes keep the schools running. |

LOL how do you not know the answer to this question?
Follow the money... |
| Maybe it's because the Catholic Church is still paying to protect pedos from Baltimore? |
Elizabeth Seaton and Ryken are also not independent |
The Baltimore Diocese has paid out over $200,000,000 including $120,000,000 in 2023. Across the US the Church has paid over $3B in settlements and jury awards. This, of course, has greatly reduced the ability to fund things like keeping elementary schools open in areas that have become less Catholic. |
I’m one of the PP and you’re right. Thanks for correcting my mistake. ADW does provide financial aid at Catholic high schools though. https://adwcatholicschools.org/tuition-assistance/archdiocesan-tuition-assistance-program/ |
