Nut free

Anonymous
We are invited to a family lunch. One attending distant family have strict diet and really health conscious, like buy all organic, limited sweet, no deep fried, no junk food, no heavy seasoning etc.. And one teen has nut allergy, and I hear small exposure can send her to ER. The host(inlaws) is planning to cook a ton of food. I am not planning to cook, but we would want to bring something. We hesitate of dessert because they are all sweet. No one will drink alcohol or wine. There will be a total of 15 people (3 ES kids, 3 college kids and other are adults). We have thought of some light pastries from bakery, but I cannot guarantee they are from nut free environment. The only thing that I can think of is the lame nut free mini cupcake from supermarket, but I know that the distant family will not eat that. Any other suggestions?

We have not seen the distant family like a decade, and we have to make sure that nothing we bring may send their teen to ER. Their diet is strict, and that limit the choices we would choose from. DH does not want any pre-packaged food from Costco because everyone ship at Costco.

I would ignore the health conscious aspect and only focus on bringing nut-free food. You can just call bakeries local to you and ask if they're nut free.

If DH is going to create difficult criteria, then he can be in charge of figuring out what to bring that won't kill the relative with the nut allergy.

Baked by Yael and Dog Tag Bakery are both fully nut free, and offer a range of options you could bring.

Is the nut free kid part of the health conscious family? Would he even eat/appreciate a nice dessert from a nut free bakery?

If you’re cooking- When I cook for people with allergies I may buy fresh ingredients (my open sugar may have traces of flour in it, for example…). And I consider the tools I’m using - I use my food processor for beans often and have a friend with a legume allergy. As hard as I try to keep that thing clean there are so many crevices that I’m not going to use it for my legume-free friend.

Easy enough to bake something without nuts. I’d do that. A trifle would be nice.

Bring a nice fruit assortment.

Sunflower Bakery in Rockville is nut free.

I’d also bring a fruit salad for the health conscious person (and others!).

Are you sure you have to bring food?
How about nice flavored sparkling waters or mineral water like Pellegrino?
