I am not into makeup so I don't know much about the various products and am overwhelmed seeing all the various kinds.
From what I researched, MAC is supposed to be good. The products seem to be very expensive - For the beginner, and a teen, if I were to buy just 2 or 3 face products where should I start? (Not lipsticks - she wants foundation, tint??, highlighter) And do these products go on sale? Thank you! |
| Take your teen to Sephora or Ulta. |
This. Or, go on your own and ask them what they recommend for a teen starter set. |
| Sephora or Ulta do not buy it for her unless she tells you what she wants. Otherwise you will buy something she may never use |

With things like foundation or tint you really need to go in person so that you can get the right color match. Also different skins work with different types of foundation. Also does she have acne or sensitive skin?
MAC is a good brand but I would put it in the heavier makeup look category. Most teens are looking to have more of a natural dewy look (which is good for beginners). I echo other responses to take her to Sephora or Ulta so she can try different brands and pick out what works for her skin. |
| Let her experiment with her girl friend. |
| Get her an Ulta gift card for the holidays (price point per item can be cheaper than Sephora) and let her go experiment. |
If the teen is to makeup? CVS or Walmart. She doesn't need to start at an ultra expensive store like Sephora. |
| *new to makeup |

I probably wouldn't buy a young teen MAC, especially for foundation type stuff.
I'd get her a makeup lesson at Sephora, letting them know what she wants to focus on, and take it from there. I haven't done one in many years, but I think you pay like $50 or something but you can use it toward products. Which works well here, because the products is what she wants anyway. |
So basic |
| I took our teen to Blue Mercury - they taught her how to accentuate her positives - she's in her early 20s now and still does a great job with makeup (I'm a mom who wears none), and doesn't look overly made up |

I don’t think I’d buy Mac for a kid just getting into makeup. It’s good makeup but it’s just a LOT, they tend to promote heavier makeup and more dramatic and colorful looks, and I don’t know that the Mac “look” is on trend for a teen these days. I mean, you can make any brand fit your look, but it takes more expertise than a beginner.
Look at some of the decent but still somewhat “budget” brands. A lot of them appeal to teens too. ColourPop, Morphe, e.l.f., Milani are a few. They are mostly at Ulta and online. Korean brands are popular too and usually on the more affordable end. She can also get smaller/travel sizes from more upscale brands - Tarte and Benefit have a lot of smaller size products. |

Yeah? That's exactly what OP needs, you idiot. |
