Anatomy/Physiology vs. forensic science for 12th grader

Anonymous
Any info on anatomy/physiology or forensics? My kid is not into science but most colleges want to see four years. If your kid took either of these, did they like it? How was the workload?

What schools are offering forensic science??

A&P and Forensic are very different science classes focused on very different things. A&P is going to be more memorization heavy and focused specifically on the body. Good for a Science focused kid, especially one thinking of anything involved with medicine. Forensics is going to look at the physical and observable science and analysis involved in detecting and analyzising crime.

I wouldn't suggest A&P for a kid that is not into Science unless they have a specific interest in the topic.

Have kid ask around and see if the teacher for either class has a good reputation.

It's listed on the BCC website, but we've been burned before by this school (and others, my friends report) touting so many electives, and then warning that it depends on teacher availability and student interest... which then translates to "oops, your kid registered but actually there won't be that class next year".

These aren’t core science classes like bio, chem, and physics. Colleges want those.

I took Anatomy in high school a bazillion years ago and it was a tough class. It’s a known weeder in college. Forensic sounds like a much easier class and if your child isn’t STEM bound, I wouldn’t bother.

This is for a kid who will already have taken bio, chem and physics.

I took A&P in high school also. It involved dissection of a cat, which sounds gross but was fantastic. Not that hard with the hands on aspect of dissection. My lab partner became an oncology surgeon. I did not go into a health profession, but it gave me a terrific foundation for understanding my own health and medical issues. If your kid is interested, I'd encourage it.

No, no it wasn't. And if you have a cat, do not recommend taking this class if it involves a cat.
