| DC was just accepted. DC is a very strong straight-A student at a magnet DCPS and is still applying RD to more competitive schools. But I was curious about what the school is like if anyone has recent experience there. TIA |

I can't comment on the school specifically, but if your kid likes or loves living in a city like DC then your kid will hate Allentown and specifically where Muhlenberg is located in Allentown.
It's hard to give you a good proxy that you might understand...would your kid enjoy attending a small college in a "nice" part of Hagerstown, MD (meaning, the nice part is still not that nice but it's fine)? If the answer to the above is yes...then just concentrate on what the school itself offers...but if it is no, then don't think just college-life will overcome the shortcomings of the area. |
| Would you say it's woke? |
Our DD attended a different SLAC in a rural area but I just wanted to chime in and say she specifically sought out a school in an environment totally different from DC, where she grew up. She knew she would settle either here or another city/suburban area after graduation and wanted to experience something totally different for undergrad. So don’t let all of the people who say your kid must be in a city to enjoy college sway the decision. That being said, it definitely needs to be something your son desires. Our DD loved her four years in a small town but it’s not for everyone. |
Allentown isn't a rural area...I wouldn't even say it's a small town. It's a semi-depressed city of around 110,000 people. So, you are in a city, just an unexciting city and the specific area where Muhlenberg is located has little commercial activity either. Burlington, VT as an example is 60% smaller but has far more going for it in terms of what the small town offers. |

Not sure for the extreme hate of the area. Yes, it isn't the most exciting place on earth. But being near Allentown also means that there is a major hospital nearby (Lehigh Valley Health is excellent), at least some basic shopping nearby, and it isn't an awful drive from Philly, NYC or even DC. So if someone wants a SLAC, it is actually in a more densely populated area closer to civilization than a lot of the alternatives.
Unfortunately, it seems that some people here just can't wrap their arms around why a kid would choose a SLAC. If you are dumb enough to go in expecting to live in a city and/or go to a big school, it will be awful. But not everyone wants NYU or Ann Arbor. Different strokes for different folks. Don't yuck my yum. |
| OP here: DC is aware that the area is not exciting, and yes, would prefer to be in NYC. But I am asking specifically about the academic and social experience at the school-- we didn't get a chance to tour so don't even have a sense for the "vibe". Thanks. |
No, I’m from the area. There is a large theater scene but I also know homeschooled Christian kids who go there and a kid from a very strict religious immigrant family. All types. |
If you are asking this question your kid is too dumb and will fail out. Get a god damned dictionary moron |
Why are you on this board if you think people are idiots if they ask about colleges? |
Huh? Are you having a bad day? I am asking if someone on this board has a child in this school and what their experience is like. |
| Why are people pretending like there aren't tons of restaurants, bars, coffee places, shops, etc. within a fifteen minute walk of campus? I would love for my kid to go to a college where there's this much going on. |
| Ignore the trolls. I reported the post that others responded to and it was deleted. Don't let them ruin reasonable discussion - just report and move on. |
How will a dictionary tell me if a particular school is woke? Moron. |
| I have a relative who graduated a few years ago. I think they had a good experience— generally a nice place to be (socially). Still friends with some of the kids and went on to get an advanced STEM degree. |
