Immigration is a mess at IAD

Anonymous
Why is the TSA such a sh*tshow at IAD? Probably fine for American citizens but not for the rest of us. Nine times out of ten, the lines are terrible and it is under resourced, but surely it’s the easiest thing in the world to plan for passenger numbers since this is all stuff that’s known in advance.

Do you mean Customs and Border Patrol?

I just waited about 2 hours at France's customs and border patrol. Mexico was a mess too when I was there last month. This is not unique to IAD.

Customs? They are long and tedious, no matter what country or airport you are in.

Dulles has always been like that for non-US citizens. We have friends who had 2 hours waits pretty commonly even 15 years ago.

You should get Global Entry if you have a less-than-clear immigration background or are a criminal; expect delays. Immigration is a privilege, not a right.

I’m a citizen with global entry but the last US customs agent I had was so cranky I thought she was doing a bit.

Agree. IAD is definitely the worst I have experienced, although obviously I haven’t been to every airport. And no, this this isn’t on Trump. It has always been this way. Took my teenager 4.5 hrs from plane landing till they emerged. Line for non-US citizens took almost 3 hours. They have to do a second immigration screening as a green card applicant and luckily it was only one hour so much shorter than usual. Of course, it was still an hour to process only about 15 people. That can take up to 2 hours, not surprisingly, because often there will be one or maybe two officers processing up to 100 people.

Foreigner here. In all the 20 years I've lived here and passed through IAD, it's nearly always been crazy. When my kids were too large to be held in arms but too young to trudge in line for hours, they would lie down on the ground in the queue, with their heads on their bags, and go to sleep. I would settle them in between two lines, and then slide them gently as we slowly moved forward.

It's not a humane way of treating people, that's for sure. And then when you've super tired from standing in the queue, you get harassed by a disrespectful Border Control agent!

Yep. I’ve waited long periods of time at CDG a number of times over the past several years. This is pretty common worldwide when you are coming in to a country where you are not a citizen.

I figure, I’m a guest here, so I need to follow their rules and be patient.

Agree IAD is worse to arrive at than BWI internationally. They routinely have 3-5 agents working and then 3 flight arrivals at the same time. It’s bad management.

Immigration is a privilege, not a right? What’s that got to do with anything? We’re talking about poor management of the border control process at Dulles, aren’t we?

PP has no clue what they're talking about, but thanks for calling it out.
