Locked in to bad skiing Utash christmas trip, spent a lot

I guess we are locked into a poor snow season and the rental company won't let us differ or cancel. Spent over 20k including first class tickets, was trying to make a special christmas. I guess thats my punishment for not staying on the east coast!

Always rent cancellable accommodations and book plane tickets that you can cancel.

Where can you find cancellable accommodations?

every ski ski out place airbnb, rental company and even hotels like marriot have (30 day[s] before arrival). if you must cancel after this deadline. If you have made a prepayment, we will retain all or part of your prepayment. If not, we will charge your credit card. This fee equals your room charge plus tax for all the nights of your reservation.

You will still have a lot of fun with a change of scenery.. and you will have some beautiful scenery. I am sure there are plenty of things to do where you are going.

The problem with the world's tiniest violin is having difficulty locating it in times of need.

20k is really not that much for this kind of vacation. You should have done more research...the best snows are in early Feb.

Christmas time has been too early for a good ten years now. Push to presidents day.

This is why I stay at in Sandy UT and drive to the mountain. There are plenty of hotels there that let you cancel, we stay on east coast time so can drive to the mountain early enough to avoid traffic. We always have a great trip and don't stress about cancelling if we need to thanks to staying at a budget hotel and using airline miles.

You need to be able to still have a lot of fun and a wonderful Christmas in this situation, or perfect snow wouldn’t have been able to make you happy.

You can have a poor snow season skiing in Vermont at Christmas as well.

2x we had rain in VT at Christmas break.

The year we went to Stowe, few greens were open. I didn't want to destroy my knees on icy steep slopes so I skiied the same 3 runs over and over again while my daredevil family took on the steep stuff an entire mountain away.

Don’t beat yourself up OP. This has been an unusually bad November and December for Utah and Colorado and you never could have predicted that. It’s a bummer but weather is always a risk for pretty much any vacation. Just go and try to make the best of it.
