The horror of surrogacy: when will we be honest?

Anonymous
Another day, another horrifying story of surrogacy abuse. We have stronger laws against dog breeders in most states than we do against surrogacy, and the victimization and abuse in the surrogacy industry are awful. We don’t allow baby kittens and puppies to be separated from their mothers at birth, but apparently human babies don’t deserve the same respect.

Young surrogate-born adults are organizing to speak out against surrogacy, but this industry is so corrupt and abusive and riddled with wealth that they face an uphill battle. This is all so wrong. These are human babies, not bulk discount orders. There is a reason the US stands alone in the world with its appalling commercial surrogacy industry, which nearly all other countries ban. Enough is enough. Let’s at least be honest about what surrogacy actually means in this country.

Quotes from article (sorry I can’t do a gift link):

Xu calls himself “China’s first father” and is known in China as a vocal critic of feminism. On social media, his company said he has more than 100 children born through surrogacy in the U.S.

Several of his kids were being raised by nannies in nearby Irvine as they awaited paperwork to travel to China. He hadn’t yet met them, he told the judge, because work had been busy.

Another wealthy Chinese executive, Wang Huiwu, hired U.S. models and others as egg donors to have 10 girls, with the aim of one day marrying them off to powerful men, according to people close to the executive’s education company.

The market has grown so sophisticated, experts say, that at times Chinese parents have had U.S.-born children without stepping foot in the country. A thriving mini-industry of American surrogacy agencies, law firms, clinics, delivery agencies and nanny services—even to pick up the newborns from hospitals—has risen to accommodate the demand, permitting parents to ship their genetic material abroad and get a baby delivered back, at a cost of up to $200,000 per child.

Some agencies don’t hesitate. Hu Yihan, the CEO of New York IVF clinic Global Fertility & Genetics, who helps connect Chinese parents with surrogacy agencies, said that when one of her clients wants three or four simultaneous surrogacies, the reaction is often enthusiastic. “I’m getting positive feedback from the surrogacy agencies, they’re like, ‘This is a big one! I want to do this!’” she said.

An increasing number of “crazy rich” clients are commissioning dozens, or even hundreds, of U.S.-born babies with the goal of “forging an unstoppable family dynasty,” he said.

Rhea CEO Margaret Wang said Rhea, which opened an IVF clinic in Los Angeles late last year, targets parents interested in what she called “regulatory arbitrage” to access fertility and surrogacy services that may be illegal in their home countries. “The U.S. remains the destination for people who have the resources and need to go down that path,” Wang said.

… and the accounts shared details of the confidential U.S. court hearing attended by Xu, a cropped photo of Xu’s passport, photos and videos of Xu’s children and other personal documents. The children are shown in the company of nannies or in daycare-like settings eating meals, playing or reciting homework assignments.

Many of the U.S. surrogate babies who are commissioned by Chinese investors are destined to be brought to China for organ-harvesting.

Harvesting organs for transplant, such as hearts, lungs, livers, corneas, etc. is extremely profitable.

A single surrogate’s organs can be sold on the world market for millions of dollars. Wealthy buyers in rich Gulf states or other areas are willing to buy transplant organs with no questions asked.

True. Some of these babies are destined for execution. God, it is so awful.

I suspect not hearts because that requires a dead donor. Lungs seem to be pretty iffy as well although you can live with one lung.

'm skeptical of doing multiple surrogacies for organ trafficking purposes, though--who would anticipate needing to have 50 extra kidneys available?

What organs are most frequently trafficked?
Kidneys are the most common on the “organ market,” followed by livers and corneas. Emerging markets exist for human eggs, skin, human embryos, and blood plasma.

And I thought about spies. This is much worse.

But then I read, birthright citizenship is the primary driver along with European looks and height.

I’m sorry, this sounds like utter nonsense

FFS baby organ harvesting. OK

Are the baby organs going to be transplanted into other babies? How useful is a “baby organ” to a wealthy adult

Chinese people actually do not like mixed race children

Back when the orphanages were full of up to a million abandoned children during the 1 child policy years, the children of clear mixed race were considered the least desirable orphans to adopt

In our adoption group we had one baby with clearly red-brown hair. When we were doing the adoption paperwork in Guangzhou for the US visa when the parents put down red-brown for hair color, they were told by the officials to do it over again because “all Chinese black hair black eyes only” … it was apparently considered a shameful thing to present as any other way, even when it was obviously true

Also, while the orphanage population has drastically declined, there are still probably somewhere between 100-200K orphans scattered around <1000 orphanages (social welfare institutes or SWIs) … why would anyone need to spend a crazy amount of money to grow a child overseas just to take their organs or execute them? For birthright US citizenship, sure. But not for ‘organ harvesting’ when there are thousands and thousands of orphans who could easily go quietly missing that would be a better potential genetic match than one with ‘European looks’

I'm lost.

Are baby organs being harvested?

Or are surrogate organs being harvested?

Doesn't the surrogate stay here in the US?

I believe the story about some rich oligarch type guy who wants to have lots of automatic children with US birthright citizenship, but I don't understand anything else in this thread.

Surrogacy is illegal in most European countries s d it should be illegal in the US but wealthy America won't. Use poor women to have their babies so they don't lose their figures? Surrogacy is s

The real story here is why rich oligarchs are being allowed to exploit women and legal loopholes to create armies of offspring that they have no intention of raising themselves.

Why do the very worst, most morally bankrupt people think the human race needs 100 more copies of their bottom-of-the-barrel eugenicist genes? And how do they imagine that being an absentee father and having their assembly-line kids raised by nannies leads to psychologically healthy adults? It sounds like something right out of Brave New World. There needs to be a lot more oversight of this.

They want to build dynasties. See MSN article about wealthy Chinese wanting sometimes 200 surrogates.

I’m so shaken. In my nightmares I would never have leapt to this as remotely possible. I oppose surrogacy as a way for rich and selfish monsters to use (poor) women as biped wombs.

This is still crazy talk.

There are multiple gay male couples on social media who have had perfectly normal healthy families via surrogacy where the surrogate doesn't have ANY genetic material in common with the babies they are carrying. They are obviously, as a group, very much wanted children and it's just that not everyone has a uterus and no one can grow children in a lab. Yet.

Many are all old enough to now to speak for themselves. Or at least old enough for anyone to see on video that their situations speak for themselves. They're happy, well-cared for and pretty normal.

I don't believe for a moment there is any "movement" of children from surrogacy to "speak out" about any evils of their situations.

I really don't understand this entire thread, it's like Haitians are eating dogs and cats ... Chinese are farming babies for execution here in the US ... like what lol

There is speculation (probably with some truth) that some of the babies that result will eventually be executed and harvested for organs, once out of the US. The babies leave. The surrogates stay.

China has had a robust black market for organs for some time and there was known prisoner organ harvesting going (may still be going on). It is not inconceivable that some of these babies will end up dead for that purpose.
