My usual new baby gift for people that I don't know super well but still want to celebrate is a personalized PBK baby blanket. I have two I would like to purchase soon, both for first-time parents in cold weather areas (Chicago and Boston.) One is DH's cousin and the other is my neighbor's new grandchild.
I'm looking at the Luxe Cable Knit Sherpa (for warmth, I'm thinking for a stroller or on top of a buckled carseat, etc.) https://www.potterybarnkids.com/products/luxe-cable-knit-sherpa-baby-blanket/ or would just a cotton/knit one be more useful? something like this? https://www.potterybarnkids.com/products/cotton-knit-patchwork-organic-baby-blanket/ My kids are teens so I just wanted to check in that this is still an ok gift. The new parents in question are professionals and are not in need of necessities. Would this type of gift be welcome? Recommend something better? I appreciate any advice from current parents of babies! Thanks. |
| No blankets! They get a bazillion. And can only donate to an animal shelter if monogrammed. |
| Definitely the second. A lot of parents are starting to prefer natural fibers over synthetics, especially for babies. |

I like the Sherpa blanket better based on its looks. I wouldn't virtue signal about the fabric content.
As an overly sentimental person, I actually would prefer not to receive a monogrammed item. It feels wrong getting rid of such a thing and keeping bedding for the next generation is a fools' errand. I'm currently keeping some stuff from my babies but when I can emotionally part with it, it will go. I have half of my dad's coming home outfit and my baby shoes with name on the soles. And a full adorable PBK crib bedding set my future DILs will likely refuse. My coworkers gave my younger kid an unmonogrammed baby blanket with cars on it and a matching onesie. The car design is an inside joke. I still have it but I took marvelous pics with it so I can part with it if the time comes. It is thin and flat so doesn't take up much room. It may make it to heirloom status. I would do the cream Sherpa blanket and give a gift receipt. The mom might be inundated with blankets. If I were buying something not off a registry I would buy a fun outfit in a larger size (12-18 months) and some "Back to Sleep" swaddle sleeper sacks. I have occasionally given a specific set of Dansk toddler flatware that I know works well from personal experience. I've bought it deadstock NIB off eBay because many recipients apparently don't use it. But I found it functional and elegant. And storing two pieces of flatware for 30 years is NBD. |

OP here. Thanks - I will reconsider my options.
Any ideas for a thoughtful upscale baby gift from ie: your parents' friends or a distant relative? I'm sure I could track down the registries but is that creepy plus most of the items may be gone since the babies are here now. |
| We got a Kyte Baby sleep sack as a gift and I loved that thing. They come in different weights. |
| I received a personalized pbk blanket for both kids- didn't receive many other blankets and none that big. One of my favorite gifts. We have the top one pictured- I don't love it as much as what my first received but they don't make that one anymore |
| The monogrammed PBK blanket is a wonderful gift! I just had a baby and only one person gave us a blanket. I use it often. I would love a monogrammed one! |
Something fancy from an educational or European brand. But not too large. https://www.habausa.com/collections/new/products/underwater-world-wooden-shape-sorter |
| We got hand me downs for nearly everything ( clothes toys, various swings/containers, cribs)...was lovely to have some new personalized things |

If you want to buy a blanket, the Woolino toddler blanket is still in use on my 5yo's bed (on top of his comforter on cold nights). It is soooo soft and lovely. It's been a summer toddler bed blanket, car seat blanket, cozy couch blanket, and a travel blanket for him. I wish they made it in bigger sizes, but I suspect it would be cost prohibitive. It's lovely.
Other gift idea is something a parent may not think to buy themselves, like a personalized wooden block with all the baby's birth info. It's a nice keepsake that I never would have thought to buy when my kid was a newborn. |
| Lovevery playmat. |
And quince has a cheaper knock off! |
| Gift card |

I would have loved to have some of these wooden toys: https://www.thenaturalbabyco.com/collections/grimms/rainbow
Ones with pieces they can make designs out of later will age with them longer than a stacking toy. The rainbow is now a pretty classic toy. This is THE company to buy from but there are others with more options. Remember they don’t need to all be baby gifts, they are only an infant for a few months so buy for slightly older age to give something that will be used for years. |
