As an overly sentimental person, I actually would prefer not to receive a monogrammed item.  It feels wrong getting rid of such a thing and keeping bedding for the next generation is a fools' errand.  I'm currently keeping some stuff from my babies but when I can emotionally part with it, it will go.  I have half of my dad's coming home outfit and my baby shoes with name on the soles.  And a full adorable PBK crib bedding set my future DILs will likely refuse.

My coworkers gave my younger kid an unmonogrammed baby blanket with cars on it and a matching onesie.  The car design is an inside joke.  I still have it but I took marvelous pics with it so I can part with it if the time comes. It is thin and flat so doesn't take up much room.  It may make it to heirloom status.

I would do the cream Sherpa blanket and give a gift receipt.  The mom might be inundated with blankets.

If I were buying something not off a registry I would buy a fun outfit in a larger size (12-18 months) and some "Back to Sleep" swaddle sleeper sacks.

I have occasionally given a specific set of Dansk toddler flatware that I know works well from personal experience.  I've bought it deadstock NIB off eBay because many recipients apparently don't use it.  But I found it functional and elegant.  And storing two pieces of flatware for 30 years is NBD.[/quote]
