| Anyone here doing Prolia injections for osteoporosis? Would be interested in knowing any side effects you may have noticed, along with effectiveness of this treatment. Thank you! |

No personal experience, but my SIL has switched after a year+ of ineffective Fosamax. Her scan shows some bone growth so she’s very happy with it and didn’t mention any side effects.
As an aside, apparently Fosamax is ineffective in 75% of cases (what SIL’s Dr. told her). |
How is it ineffective? I thought Fosamax is taken to prevent worsening of bone loss. Or is it supposed to increase bone? |

Fosamax is supposed to prevent further bone loss but apparently may not work that well in a lot of people? SIL was frustrated that her dr. did not have some additional scans 6 months in, but at around a year they checked and Fosamax was ineffective for her.
Obviously I am not a medical professional and am only mentioning what she told me. The Prolia is definitely making a difference for her based on the scans. |
OP here and it’s really both. I’ve taken Fosamax for 4 years and it gradually became less effective. Year one saw great results and increase of bone density. By year 3-4 it wasn’t doing anything and bone loss started back. Hence the step up to Prolia. |
I think insurance covers a DEXA scan once a year. |
| Take the warning about invasive dental work seriously. My mom had a failed implant while on Prolia. She developed osteonecrosis of the jaw. Luckily the surgeon was able to clean out the infection and save her jaw, but the bone was very weak. She was warned not to eat any hard food or she would risk fracturing her jaw. She no longer does Prolia. |
