GF is extremely snappy and angry

My gf, 43, is extremely grumpy and snapping on little things these days. She suddenly gets very impulsive like she is happy with me and holding hands, kissing etc and telling me that she has been the happiest in her life and then gets upset on a small thing. Nothing major changed for us that has changed from a year or two before. She wears the engagement ring but then gets upset and takes it off and says that it is not working. Then come back and try to be normal. We have been together close to 3 years and this behavior is baffling. She has been dealing with a few medical issues including thyroid and recent weight gain and I have been very supportive by taking care of house chores, finances, buying her flowers, date nights, vacations etc but this part of her behavior is worrying me a lot. I want to know if anyone has gone through the same issues at this age due to peri-menopause or something else going on.

Oh boy! Is he bi-polar? I don't think perimenopause or thyroid would make you like this.

BPD? Is she like this with her family or friends?

It’s the hormones. I was like this until I found a great doctor who got me on the right thyroid meds plus added progesterone and testosterone. Progesterone and T are amazingggg.

When I was hyperthyroid (TSH close to 0) I went crazy with anxiety because I felt no one understood what I was going through. I went into thyroid storm and was hospitalized and had my thyroid removed. It was possibly the worse time of my life.

I hope your girlfriend gets regular bloodwork and that her TSH is within the normal range. She needs the right meds at the right dose and she needs to be serious in taken it every day at the same time, away from foods (no grapefruit, no calcium or iron or other supplements within 4 hours of the meds). She could also have other medical issues, or be bipolar (inquire if there are such illnesses in her family).

Isn't 43 a little young for HRT and other stuff? Did you lose weight after your thyroid meds got balanced?

I know a few people with thyroid issues but this is extreme. Just a misbalance of thyroid can't make this bad. I suspect, something else is going on with OP's gf.

Op, time to bail.

If she is bi-polar then why it is only coming out now and not before? Hormone fluctuation could be to blame here but I am not a doc.

Some patients have few bipolar fluctuations in their lives. How long has OP known this person?

No, I’m 39 and probably should have started a lot earlier.

Some people’s bodies are more prone to hormonal disruption, usually it’s a combination of genes and environmental factors. One of my kids got my shitty genes and needed hormonal treatment at a very young age.

She really should get a full work up with a specialist. Likely she’s also deficient in vitamin D, iron, etc.

what else you have to be careful about? Do you also have PCOS or anything like that? Vitamin D or Iron shouldn't be causing this. Did you gain weight or lose after HRT and thyroid medication?

Aren’t bipolar cycles typically longer?

X2. The next time she takes the ring off, pick it up and say you’re right, pack your shit, and move out without saying another word.
