Well, this sucks. TIL about the “temporary “ holiday price increases for packages. This seems like yet another quiet effort to kill the USPS — as a public service. October through January price increases to be “competitive “ with private shipping services. I hope that means that they’re charging the private companies for doing their “last mile” deliveries. The US Government is in line to be one more of Trump’s bankrupt businesses.

The need for rural delivery is partly what makes USPS such a money loser. Will these new rates take that into account?

This price increase happens every year.

Also, though, this year's price increases overall (holiday or not) are beyond the pale.

The main problem is the way congress has mandeated the USPS deal with its pension funding.

It’s not a business. The S in USPS stands for Service.

We don’t expect firehouses to make money when they put out fires. Why do we expect USPS to make money when they deliver our mail?

It’s a service, not a “business” that’s already being hampered by unreasonable requirements. And, yes, I will rail about post offices closing — since this temporary increase, especially when the USPS does last-mile-delivery, is supporting private business over the USPS.

It started in 2020. I believe that was under Trump and DeJoy — with the goal of privatizing postal services. So your “every year” is not only relatively recent, it’s only been under DeJoy and under whoever has recently replaced him. So, yeah, the main problem is pension funding, but DeJoy’s policies are designed to break the US Postal service with the goal of prioritizing private delivery services.

When will USPS stop delivering the junk mail? Who is paying for that? It’s certainly not competitive pricing.

FFS, the government is NOT a business. The government exists to provide the functions a civilized society requires. Governments
do not operate for profit.

And literally nothing has been improved or made more affordable by becoming privatized. The entire point of privatization is to maximize profit. This is done by decreasing expenses (quality) and increasing the price.
