We just like to make sure it can go in both the dishwasher and the microwave. We've bought dinnerware from Bloomingdales and Ikea. Both lasted. the same amount of time (15-ish years).

Got crate and barrel on sale. Dishwasher and microwave safe, look nice, and great for everyday and for special dinners.

Check out Goodwill. There are always decent sets of plates there. No need to buy new.

Do people use paper plates for larger gatherings?

Never. I hate them.

I hate them, too. I have 20 glass plates that I bought at BB&B many years ago; I bring them up from the basement if we're feeding a crowd.

We have a set from Crate & Barrel that has held up well for a little over ten years so far.

I only use paper plates for a casual backyard BBQ for 20+. Anything smaller or indoors, we use real plates.

I'm still pissed nobody bought the Denby dishes I registered for in 1999. I honestly don't think I got one place setting and I know my mom always bought dishes for my cousins when they all got married.

So I got Fiestaware and we're still using it.

We have ikea and C&B. IKEA, which is older, has held up better.

I have C&B which is amazing but over time of course they break and while C&B tends to have set after set in white, it's not our same beloved set. Replacements doesn't even have.

We bought C&B Mercer dishes for our vacation house, and I liked them so much that I bought them for my primary home. They are relatively inexpensive; they are open stock so you don't have to be committed to buying sets; and they mix and match well with other styles and patterns if you want some variety.
