Bleeding 2 years into menopause

Anonymous
As of November I've been in full menopause for 2 years. I started spotting last night. Sometimes dark, sometimes bright red. I've had period like cramps and a back ache all day.

I'll call for an appointment tomorrow, but I alternate between being annoyed, and worried. I've been exhausted lately but blaming it on my disability.

Has anyone else experienced this and had it be no big deal? I'm not on any hormones.

Agree you should get this checked out asap with your Gyn.

Good luck, OP.

unfortunately your gyn will probably tell you you need to get an ultrasound and either an in office biopsy or a hysteroscopy. it's probably fine but they will want to check it out.

I'm thinking the ultrasound for sure, and go from there if needed. I don't have a gynecologist, I just see my PCP.

Your pcp can order the ultrasound. But go ahead and find and make an appointment with a gyn who you can discuss this with. You don't want a PCP managing this. They don't have as much experience reviewing the ultrasound nor performing endometrial biopsies. They cannot perform hysteroscopies, etc.

Perimenopause can last up to 10 years

Yes, but once you have gone 12 months without a period, perimenopause is over. OP is in menopause, when any vaginal bleeding needs to be checked out, ASAP.

For an in-office endometrial biopsy, make sure you take pain reliever ahead of time. Check with your doctor to make sure you don’t have any health condition or medication that would make ibuprofen contraindicated. My primary had me take 800 mg of ibuprofen with food one hour before the procedure and I’m grateful because it was definitely needed.

For a hysteroscopy, they’ll put you under anesthesia.

That's not how it works.

Op here.

This is ridiculous. It's more than spotting now. I can't get into my doctor until next week.

I am so frustrated.

I would go to an Urgent Care.

I seriously could have written your post. I am 58. I had what I thought was my last period about a year ago but had a small one before the one year mark. As I approach the new one year mark, I had cramps yesterday, was feeling off, had some spotting and woke up this morning to a full period. Freaking out. I made an appt for late next week so i am now in waiting mode, doing a lot research and scaring myself.

The thing that sucks is that women can have phantom periods during perimenopause and barely notice. Gyns mark the last period where you could fill a pad as your last period. I have had phantom periods: cramps, bloating, breast tenderness, moodiness, cravings and only traces of blood and then a few months later, a whole period. Op likely had phantom periods in the last 2 years which went un noted because they didn't make the mark to count as a period. In my book, her menopause countdown starts over with this cycle. But, yeah, get checked out just in case.

This happened to my friend 3 years in a row: one period a year until it finally stopped.
