Spring break flights to Puerto Rico

Anonymous
We’ve found what we consider an ok price to PR ($429), but nonstop returning flights at the end of break have almost doubled from when we checked 3 weeks ago. Google flights predicts prices will go down, but is that the experience from those who have gone to PR for spring break, for those who didn’t use points and are ok with budget airlines? What would you consider a reasonable fare?

There are three airlines with direct flights from DC:
Southwest
Jet Blue and
United.

Competition should bring the prices down a bit.

I’d say a cheap flight is around $500. My guess is if you wait it will be more.

That's a good price. We are paying way more for Xmas flights on southwest. I've flown that flight for a decade now and it's fine.

Yeah, $500 rt would be a cheap flight there for spring break. or really most any time these days. I'd be surprised if you find something at peak days under $800rt at this point.

Thanks. Right now best combined price RT with reasonable times is between $920-1050. The trip out is a lot cheaper right now.

Look at buying each leg independently. Fly there with the cheapest one you can find that works for your timing and return with a different airline if there’s a cheaper option. No benefit to buying a return flight

Frontier has nonstops.

I’ve only used them once and it’s was fine. I would use them in the future.

Also, make sure to use a Chrome Incognito window to search as well. This often brings prices down by a few hundred.

I just checked and it looks like their calendar hasn't opened up yet for mid-April, so when those flights come online that might help.

I've also flown Frontier and it was fine.

The issue with frontier is their bag costs are high. You have to pay for checked and carry on and they’re generally higher than the $35 of other airlines. So frontier can seem a lot cheaper but once you have to pay for everything else, it’s usually not that much cheaper

PP above.

In my case, the frontier flight with carry-on was cheaper than my normal JB and United nonstops. It was an approximately half what I normally pay, with bag + exit row.

Yup I'd pursue this.

"What would you consider a reasonable fare?"

500 is standard, JB & United. We've friends who got March JB for 380. Our Frontier was 280, late July as I recall. I've see it this price for peak season as well.

Just know if there is an issue with your flight, Frontier will strand you, possibly for many days.

Yup I realize this.

If being stranded is consequential, I would avoid.
