APUSH vs DEUSH

Can anyone explain the difference in these 2 courses in terms of workload? Why choose one over the other? Thanks.

6 credit hours (DE) vs. 3 credit hours (AP)

AP is considered more rigorous.

Is it true the DE course stays on your college transcript?

AP - you have one test that says if you got credit or not. That AP also is a reflection of grade inflation. Get a 3 on the AP but an A in the class looks sus. Get a 5 on the AP but a B in the class another story. APs make it easy to compare a kid in Alaska with a kid in Florida.

DE - your grade is your final grade on college transcript. AOs can't compare it to other kids. Upside is that it transfers to your state schools - so no repeating US History. Play the long game either graduate college sooner or have a lighter class load.

De is by far the less rigorous class.

Take DE if your kid needs an easier class in the schedule but still wants the full 1 point boost.

Take AP if your kid wants more rigor, or if they might want to attend school outside of Virginia.

AP credits are good at out of state and private schools.

Those 6 DE credits are pure elective credits, not for gen ed reqs, so only useful if you have very few AP/DE credits.

Besides what is being said above, it all depends on the teacher. At our HS, DE kids are struggling moreso than the AP kids

Yes to this. Not for this class, but a number of students switched from DE English to AP after a couple weeks this year because the DE class was being taught in a very challenging way and they figured they should at least get credit for taking the hardest class if they are doing the work. Depends on the teacher, so talk to people in your community.

Yes. The point was that it hinges on a single test at the end of year. You have to wait another year to retake. And as you stated more universal.

DE you pretty much know where you are and you don't stress test like the AP.

Plus/minus for both options.

The class effort is entirely based on the teacher not AP > DE.

It is not that DE is more challenging than AP.

DE curriculum wise is less challenging with less rigor than AP.

Where DE becomes problematic is that DE is not allowed to follow FCPS late work policy. DE must follow NOVAs late work policy, so if you have a disorganized kid who struggles with meeting deadlines, their DE grade can tank very quickly.

AP is much more challenging and rigorous than DE, but AP follows FCPS late policy, so the kids who are disorganized have more leeway with missing deadlines or breaking work into smaller parts for their accommodations.

If your kid is a B/B+/A student who is good with deadlines, than DE will work for them because the class is less rigorous than AP with the same 1.0 gpa boost, as long as your kid turns stuff in on time. If they are organized, DE can give them a little breathing room as it is an easier program.

If they struggle with turning in their assignments, then DE will be rough, not because DE is harder than AP but because DE does not have the FCPS grace period for late work.

DEUSH but make sure it transfers to the colleges your students are applying to.

My issue with DE courses is that they are mostly online and not all students are good with virtual learning.
