| Saw on Reddit some kids got "likely letters" from Yale (not just this year but in previous years). It's a yield management tactic, some get them as early as now early Dec (b/c they don't have ED), most around Feb. Some got actual live phone call from the head of admissions. Has anyone get one and what kind of profile and stats are good enough to get one? |

Yale's likely letters are almost always sent to first gen and/or low income kids and most are for STEM. The stats are high but nothing more remarkable than any other strong applicant. And sometimes they're even pretty low--1400s SAT, etc. It's the FGLI status that triggers the letters.
They very, very rarely send them to the typical DCUM demographic. |
Yes, the kid I know who got one fits this profile. Very talented first gen URM who received acceptances to every Ivy she applied to. |
my nephew got one last year for humanities. he's an UMC white kid who lives in an UMC/UC suburb of chicago. they were even asking for aid |
likely letters aren't just a Yale thing. also, almost never go to SCEA kids, because they know those kids already most likely like yale (or Princeton or harvard) best. |
Do they offer money on the call or likely letters? Just because they are nice and welcoming wont magically make the $90k tuition more doable for these FGLI |
| My kid got one from Dartmouth last year. |
this isn't true at all. likely letters are for kids who they think they may lose in RD round. so they very much are more remarkable (or more marketable) than the standard acceptance. it is a yield technique. |
They do send some to UMC kids (and the fact that he asked for aid doesn't matter) but the general point of them is to get FGLI/URM kids to choose them over the other Ivies and top20 schools. Columbia sends them too as does Penn I believe. On Reddit there are always kids who get 2-3 of them from different schools or who receive personal calls from admissions officers in advance of the ED and RD acceptance dates. They're usually FGLI minorities from places like Missouri and are the absolute rockstars of their schools and took 10 classes dual enrollment at the local community college because their school doesn't offer APs. They may not even have the best stats in DCUM-land (say 1450 SAT) but they're from high schools where the average SAT is 950. The Ivies fight over these kids and send these letters to try and get them as well they should, I believe. It takes a special kid to be this proactive. |
what were your kid's stats? |
FGLI? |
The top Ivies have the most generous financial aid of any college. |
The girl I referenced above went to a very academically rigorous private school in Maryland where she got a full ride. She certainly wasn’t deprived of academic challege. |
| What's the point? to try to stop kids from accepting EA offers? |
| DC got one from Emory. |
