BSSM Homework the Week of HSPT

Anonymous
Was anyone else surprised at the amount of homework given to the 8th graders at St Mary’s this week? So much for getting enough rest and last minute HSPT studying.

Aren’t you glad to be almost done with that terrible school, OP?

Good preparation for life,OP. DC is a senior and kids have a ton of things to do this year (and last year), all while getting out applications, SAT/ACT prep, sports practice every afternoon, all with homework every night.

I thought the school wasn't academic enough for you?

HOMEWORK = take the work off of teachers’ plates and make more time for mass and silly assemblies/walks/other BS.

Academics is intended for home, so lazy parents can deal with it.

With AI, anyone who complains about homework or who takes more than 20 minutes to complete it, is a moron.

Sitting in carline for yet another BS day without Extended Day, and watching the dozens and dozens of “walkers,” all of whom I’m sure live in OT. Didn’t know 25 pct of students live in OT. Amazing.

Amazing you don’t have an ulcer with all the bile you bring up about the school where you choose to send your kids.

No reason to do homework, since honor roll isn't published.

Only losers go to carline. Stop whining and find your own hack. Show some agency and initiative. It’s not hard.

Who studies for the HSPT? It’s not the SAT.

People have gotten so crazy.

Your scores could earn full or partial scholarships so yeah, I made my kids study. One got a partial scholarship so it was worth it.

So.

You don't do last-minute studying for standardized tests, OP. You should know this. If you made your kids prepare, this is something they need to do well in advance, both for academic and test-taking strategies. There shouldn't be anything to do the week of the test!

What you need to ensure is having a well-rested kid. If they have so much homework that they're not getting enough sleep before the test, that's a problem, and this is where you contact the teachers and negotiate something.

But honestly no middle school doesn't give that much homework that a kid would need to go to bed late to finish it. If your child has problems in that area, they might have low processing speed, like one of my kids, and need to be formally diagnosed and receive extended time accommodations.

Or if they have too much on their plate because of extra-curriculars, then maybe this week they should skip some of those activities.

I hear you, but disagree on your point about not studying up until the last minute. What is wrong with reviewing a few key concepts each night to increase the score? Why wouldn’t you? Planning isn’t the issue. The issue is teachers assigning quizzes and busy work with minimal notice in the days leading up to the exam. ChapGpt isn’t going to help them memorize a prayer that they were tested on the day prior. They have to put the work in to get the homework done. It would have been nice if the teachers had given them homework last week that would have directly helped them prep for the HSPT instead of homework that took time away from that effort.

So the school should be less focused on academics and more focused on test prepping?
