Region 5 with new boundary options

Anonymous
Crown HS become a permanent or temporary Wootton HS which is a hot topic to discuss now. What does region 5 gain or lose? I have not seen much gains, but it seems like that region 5 would lose a new Crown HS in the regional boundary study. Does that mean regional 5 will have less resources like funding, teachers, less schools to choose from, programs, with similar size of student population ( no alleviation of any sort)? I gave not seen any benefits, but I maybe shortsighted. Please point out something that region 5 families would benefit from these new options. I am so worried!

I guess no one care about region 5 schools huh!?

Why would they get less?

Region 5 doesn't get any benefit from the new 4 options. I would say the only option that Crown neighborhood would be potentially benefited from is moving Wootton to Crown together with the Crown community. In that case the latter belongs to Region 4 technically so no, Region 5 doesn't get any benefit from the new options.

When is the next iteration of the Crown Boundary study happening?

They're not planning anything else until the superintendent releases his recommendations.

Going out on a limb, but if Wootton becomes the new Crown, which is Region 5, then Region 5 suddenly got propped up without harming Region 4 which still has RM and Churchill's high performing students.

Right now, Region 5 is Crown, Magruder, Quince Orchard, Gaithersburg, Watkins Mill, but now you'll be adding Wootton to the mix by changing its name to Crown.

If I were the Regional Model team, I'd be salivating over this one. Now Region 5 has a chance to actually prop up the new magnets with higher-performing students because Region 5 has no established countywide magnets and would need to create each one. Watkins Mill IB already performs badly, so those Wootton students who want IB will suddenly make Watkins Mill better 'cuz they can't go to RMIB anymore.

The cynic in me recognizes that MCPS hates high-performing Asian students, so this is a great way to sock it to them. MCPS already cites Wootton's dominance in the current magnets ("countywide magnets dominated by 3 HSs") as a reason why established magnets are inequitable (BS to me). Too bad MCPS never did the analysis on where the proficient students are located - could proficient students be located in the 3 HSs? If so, then the magnet system might actually be working, yet MCPS wants to blow it up anyway.

Option H still lists Crown (Wootton) as Region 4, at least for now. If they moved it to Region 5, then there would be 5 schools in region 5 and 3 schools in region 4.

I don't see any benefits in any of the models for region 5. Region 5 doesn't have any currently established, successful programs except Magruder's aviation program.

Region 1 has a lot of established programs (Blair SMCS/CAP, Einstein VAC, Whitman social justice, BCC IB...)
Region 3 has Wheaton Engineering
Region 4 has RMIB
Region 6 has Poolesville SMCS/Humanities/Global

I'm surprised there hasn't been more push back from Region 5 parents.

QO parents are unhappy at losing access to Poolesville HS magnets.

Why region 5 has no established proteins unlike other regions. That is really UNFAIR! I am QO parents. I would vote 200 percent for option H only if they make Crown HS( aka Wootton) become region 5. The board keep talking about equity and diversity across the county. They can make Crown HS programs criteria based since Wootton families dislike other non- Wootton families attending their school. Region 5 needs an at least 1 established program like other regions.

I hope they are emailing the board and filling out surveys to give that feedback.

Another QO parent here. Where is the link to the survey?

I'm also pissed that the region 5 does not have any established magnets and we lose access to Poolesville
