Going out on a limb, but if Wootton becomes the new Crown, which is Region 5, then Region 5 suddenly got propped up without harming Region 4 which still has RM and Churchill's high performing students. Right now, Region 5 is Crown, Magruder, Quince Orchard, Gaithersburg, Watkins Mill, but now you'll be adding Wootton to the mix by changing its name to Crown. If I were the Regional Model team, I'd be salivating over this one. Now Region 5 has a chance to actually prop up the new magnets with higher-performing students because Region 5 has no established countywide magnets and would need to create each one. Watkins Mill IB already performs badly, so those Wootton students who want IB will suddenly make Watkins Mill better 'cuz they can't go to RMIB anymore. The cynic in me recognizes that MCPS hates high-performing Asian students, so this is a great way to sock it to them. MCPS already cites Wootton's dominance in the current magnets ("countywide magnets dominated by 3 HSs") as a reason why established magnets are inequitable (BS to me). Too bad MCPS never did the analysis on where the proficient students are located - could proficient students be located in the 3 HSs? If so, then the magnet system might actually be working, yet MCPS wants to blow it up anyway.
