Mounjaro has killed food for me

Anonymous
I take it because I have Type 2 diabetes and it controls my A1C. Interestingly, I haven't lost any real weight on it -- maybe 7 or 8 pounds -- although I lost a bunch without drugs when I first got my diagnosis about three years ago (I had to attack the Covid weight gain). So basically, I lost about 50 pounds, got put on Ozempic at first, didn't lose any weight. Doc said let's get some more weight off you so put me on Mounjaro. Weight hasn't really moved on it, either. But my A1C is great -- 5.4 at my last checkup.

What's killing me about Mounjaro is it has absolutely killed food for me. Eating is like a chore (and sometimes I just don't do it). I have these weird periods where I am ferociously hungry -- the kind where you feel like you might vomit. But it usually passes after a couple of minutes or so. But then comes meal time ... and ... just nothing appeals. It's bizarre. Like, I know I need to eat because it's dinner time. But NOTHING is appealing. So I'll fix something, last night it was a simple meatloaf, take about four bites of it, but meh.

Same thing at breakfast. Lunch is rarely anything more than a little cottage cheese.

Even foods like pizza, burgers, etc. have no appeal.

Sometimes I wish I could enjoy food again.

Use it to lose the weight then switch to something that helps the A1C.

So why aren't you losing weight if you're taking 4 bites of something? Do you mean that you have periods where you binge to compensate?

Is that first bite enjoyable, OP?

Because I know two people (my mother and my best friend) who eat like birds and have always been underweight. They get full after a very small portion of food. They do enjoy the first few bites! But after that it's "meh" and they stop. They've always been that way and neither have anorexia or anxiety about body image.

Maybe your expectations of what it means to "eat" needs to be reframed as quality vs quantity. If those two people in my life don't like the food at the table, they're not going to eat it. They'd rather skip that meal, because to them, that's not a problem at all. You're sounding like them. It seems they've got their Mounjaro built in

However, it is strange that you aren't losing more weight despite not eating much. Something doesn't add up in that quarter. Maybe you should temporarily keep a calorie journal and track your weight to see what's going on.

No. I don’t mean that.

It’s also killed business lunches for me. I eat two meals a day (lunch and dinner) and don’t snack. I could lose a few pounds but am not obese. I look forward to lunch when traveling for work. Now it seems every person I’m working with is very non committal about lunch and then when we do sit down they order the smallest thing they can, take three bites, and are done. This thing is really changing our culture.

Get off the Mounjaro if you’re not losing weight and try something like Metformin. At least you will be able to enjoy food again. Metformin keeps my A1C around a 5.3.

Maybe discuss w your doctor

I kind of feel the same as what you describe, but to me it is MUCH more preferable than constantly thinking about what I'm going to eat next before I got on a semiglutide.

odd you aren’t losing weight if you don’t want to eat and are eating as lite as you describe. I’m on Munjaro and have the same feeling, but i lost weight too fast and have to force myself 3 meals a day (1500 cal). I don’t want to lose more than 6lbs a month so i can keep my thick hair!
