UVA letter to alum parents of applicants

Any other UVA alums get the letter we just got? Basically, it said we're so glad your kid applied but just so you know, they do not get any special treatment and don't expect them to get in at all given how competitive it is. But we appreciate your loyalty to the school!

FWIW, we already knew this and so were not expecting much. We just thought the letter was interesting. Also wondering if they send this to everyone or should this be taken as an "unlikely" letter? We did not get the same letter a few years ago when older kid applied there.

They send these to all alum applicants every year. Do a search.

As I said, we did not get it in a previous year when an older child applied. Also, the letter had information specific to this year that was very recent, so no, this is not the same as any past letters.

We got letter for two kids and both got in. One ED and one EA. Don’t think it is an unlikely.

We got one four years ago and again last year. Neither child accepted.

Everyone on Reddit got them this year. They're supposed to be sent to all alums with kids who apply (and perhaps they miscalculate some given the reply above). They don't mean anything positive or negative.

Yes we're well aware of what's been happening at UVA. My question is about the letter and its meaning.

Maybe someone found out that legacy admissions was banned, yet UVA was still holding seminars for applicants of legacy children giving “advice” on the schools admissions process.

The Alumni Association does that and they are very clear that they operate completely separately from admissions (and from the University, really) and participation has no bearing.

Honestly, the kids that are most likely to get in from my kid’s non-NOVA high school—just based on GPAs and class rank—happen to be UVA legacies as well. Will be interesting to see how it pans out this year.
