HS sports team traveling over holidays and school breaks

Anonymous
Traveling for Thanksgiving and seeing several HS teams (appears to be lax and baseball) en route as well. This seems crazy to me so I’m wondering if this fairly common for private school teams and are certain schools/sports more likely than others to do this? I’m in DMV so particularly interested to know if this is what we have to “look forward to.”

HS sports are year round - either with your club or HS team.

It is not uncommon to have winter break / thanksgiving / spring break trips

I think club teams may try to line up with holidays and breaks because they try to minimize impact on school attendance.

Junior high kid is back from the Virginia's state Latin convention, held on Sunday/Monday. So it's not just sports that shoehorns in some travel during this time.

DC’s math class on Monday had three students in it because everyone else was at the Latin convention.

We’ve experienced travel over holidays for club teams as well, but I was surprised that the teams I saw traveling were clearly school teams. And also sports that are in the off season. DS is in middle school so curious how common this is.

HS Basketball tournaments are fairly common.

High school hockey tournament travel for my kids over Thanksgiving.

My kids play baseball, and baseball is over now, at least in this area. I think the parents would revolt if we had some sort of tourney we had to fly to. We've been going no stop since March!

I do know that my lax friends go to fla for a tourney after Christmas. I think that's nice. I would be down for that.

+1. Older DS plays high school and travel baseball and younger DS who is in middle school plays travel baseball. They have games from mid March to late July, about a six week break, and then games from early September to late October/ early November. They have workouts, practices and tryouts between November and February but (in 8 years of travel baseball) have never had a tournament in those months. I have no idea what baseball team would be playing a Thanksgiving tournament, but I’m glad my kids aren’t on it!

Many teams go to Florida or other warmer states during this time.

Yes, very common though im not aware of a spring sport traveling during Thanksgiving (usually spring break). Its possible that you saw a club team that might have a lot of kids from a specific private school (very common) and they were wearing their school spirit wear. However, it is likely for winter sports to begin traveling over Thanksgiving and Christmas breaks and even other extracurricular teams. For sports teams, the schedule is likely posted on the school's website or on a dedicated IG page.

I am fairly certain that baseball teams are not allowed to actually officially play as their HS team for a Thanksgiving tournament.

I know of teams that travel south for Spring break tournaments, which is allowed as it’s in-season.

It’s possible most of the HS is playing for the same travel team.
